Tell them you'll make it private and don't put anything on there that you wouldn't want them to see. Tell them that they can look at your myspace if they want; so, they can see you're not doing anything wrong. Or if you really want to talk to your friends you could you know call them.

It's not that they don't trust you, it's that they don't trust the rest of the world.

When your older brother signed up, it was probably before all the hype in the media about predators on myspace. And some of it isn't hype - it can get pretty ugly out here on the internet.

But it could help for you to show them that you are growing up, maturing, and capable of handling it. How do you show that? By showing maturity and control when dealing with this. Show them how some profiles are set to private, and explain to them calmly how it works. Tell them that you'll give them time to think about it, and then drop the issue. If you can act mature about it, and see their side of things, it will help them trust you. It will help them see that you are maturing, and able to balance issues carefully.

Hey, how about suggesting ways to make the whole computer thing safer - showing them how they can check up on the history, or putting a filter on the computer, or even setting it up in the family room... try to take an active role in working together as a family to make it safer for you to go online. Again, this shows maturity, and with maturity comes privileges.

Your parents love you, and it's their job to protect you as much as possible.

Sit down with your parents and openly talk about why you want to use myspace and why they don't want you to use myspace. From there you can have a responsible mature talk about the safety aspects and you can say that you can make your profile only viewable by friends. You can also say to them that they can have all the sign in details and are free to check it anytime they want to, that way you are showing them that you have nothing to hid. If after everything they still say no then to gain thier trust you must obey their wishes, if you sneak off and make a myspace page and they find out about it they won't trust you and would have evry right not to.

I think your parents are just concerned for your safety more than not trusting you...so don't be too hard on them. Maybe you could try making a website on Yahoo Geocities? I know its not the same (definitely not any more safer than myspace) but it might help your parents come up with a compromise. I feel for kids today...I was running my own network for the city (BBS system) when I was 11 and no one thought twice about it.

Why don't you forget about MySpace, because your parents have a point. You can't prevent strangers from checking your profile out and talking to you. You may not think so now, but if they suck you in, it'll be terribly difficult to tell them to stop.

Try Facebook.com. It was originally used for college students so the age is 18 and above, but you can still use it. It is much safer than MySpace and my friend's parents tried it out for themselves and agreed to respect my friend's privacy with Facebook.

Maybe try talking to your parents if your normally a trustworthy kid then they should believe you when you say you won't talk to strangers. See if they will let you if once a week you show them your friends list also agree to set your page to private so no one can see your page unless you accept them as a friend. I'm also pretty sure myspace allows you to set your IM and email to friends only so only your friends can IM or email you bring these safety measures up to your parents and see if it helps them feel safer. Good Luck

i had the same problem when i was your age and i decided that i would give them my password and that i would make it private so that i only accept people i no and that seemed to work. or be meture and ask them wot they are against you having it and see wot they say and then come up with come back but stay calm or ya wont hav a chance. or try bebo alot of your friends will have that and it is alot safer so try that too good luck x

Thats unfair! I think parents do trust their sons (if they deserve it) but untrust technology, in fact, my father thought a mmorpg was a kind of forum where "bad people" as he said gave you tasks such as killing a police or something (and he works with computers!!!). Show them what you are gonna use, and hope they understand it.

Trust must be earned and maintained. I think the best way to address this is to inform your parents that you would like to earn their trust and how you can go doing so.

Show them that you are to be trusted. Prove to them that you can be trusted. Tell them that you will give they your password to you MySpace account. Tell them to have it checked every now and then. Telling them to look at your personal account will convince them that you mean business!
