This is a follow up to one of my previous questions about serial cables and programming. I need help now with the best and safest (for the computer, especially) way to set up my circuit. Ok, basicly, 10V would be coming through the RTS. I would cut it down with a resistor and then put in a diode to protect the computer. then I would have this wire lead to a transistor which would, when on, power up a small motor. Obviously this is incomplete. Im not going to go into any more detail so as to get completely new and improved ideas from you. THANKS A LOT!

I need ideas on how to better construct the circuit, so if possible, diagrams would make YOU my new favourite person!

Google for serial and parallel port controller -- there are full schematics (fairly simple) for this sort of task. One thing to keep in mind -- if you use pre-Win2k you can communicate directly with the ports without any drivers. If you use WIn2k or higher it will require a driver (or you can write your own with DDK from Microsoft)

Also, I recommend checking into microcontrollers by Atmel -- I've almost completely replaced my serial/parallel/usb with Atmega 128 chips.

I dont know what exactly your doing, but, if this is a simple program sending info to a simple circuit via serial cable, then you can use 3 lines. Tx, Rx and GND should be enough. just get a RS232 chip for your cicuit.
