The word is always used with such disdain - is it a spiteful way of saying Conservative? Or is it some branch of Conservativism that has been singled out and defined by Liberals.

Here is a movie that explains the roots of the neocon philosophy

They are a few rich elite americans (mostly) that want to ensure their families control the world. It is an aristocracy that sees the average man as simpleminded and just there to service them. Some are christians that want to make the world christian as they see it as the only religion...
Other neocons are the christian right who only vote for one reason, to propagate their religious views, put christian prayer and creationism in schools and limit freedoms of others, such as gays, abortionists, drug users etc....

These two groups unite for a common agenda
The elite laugh at the christian right because they actually vote to hurt themselves but are so blinded by their own hatred of liberals and propaganda they vote for the evil regime,,,,,

The elite own most of the media and the corporations that are much too powerful, the liberals are revolutionaries against this raping of the american people and also the world.... that is why we seem to support Muslims that hate americans because they have good reason too... The neocons are evil and only want to control the world......

Bush is a neocon puppet
and i think hillary may be
Ron paul is the only true republican
Barack is a true democrat....
i would vote for either despite my socialist lean,,,

socialist is a bad word in america from the elites propaganda
I am a socialist much like hollywood stars... and the european countries....

A neocon is a new conservative. Which means rather than the fiscally responsible ways of old conservatives who preferred to stay out of people's lives, new conservatives like to spend as much tax payer money as possible to help big corporations, start wars, while meddling in people's privacy and sex lives. It's all very corrupt and sordid, which is kind of ironic given that they are supposed to have high morals.

It is neither. It is an actual group with certain ideals. I laugh every time I see it because I know that most who use it have no idea what it means and think it is just a derogatory term for conservatives.

You'll get answers like Nazi etc but in reality they are basically people who felt the Democratic party went too far left. They are more to the right in some ways and far left in other ways.

Neo-conservative. It used to be former liberals who left the Democratic Party after the 60s because they were very hawkish. They believe that we have to spread democracy in order to gain peace and order in the world.
