I am doing a personal project on werewolves, faeries, elves, and vampires. Right now I'm working on getting information for werewolves. Can you please tell me any info you know on werewolves? And please don't put down any websites, because I'm already searching websites.

Legend:
werewolves were first and foremost people who in mythology have been changed out of their forms by the old gods. this was often done as punishment for hubris. the people were sentenced to attack the ones they love, since that could not be controlled they were shuned from society. kind of like everyone hated the thing the werewolf becomes more than they loved the person that once was. the gods thought that was pretty ****** hilarious.

Medical:
lycanthropy is a psychological condition where the person exibits high agression and mindlessness on regular periods but remains normal the rest of the time. the bestial periods have been explained as an outlet for stress. no known treatment.
(not to be confused with vampirism, where the person is just plain evil or suffering from rabies)

Anthropological:
it all comes back to tribes of people living in the wild. they did not have to fear animals because of their intelligence, and they did not fear each other because they knew everyone personally. but what if one of them was controlled by an animal nature with power enough to destroy humans easily. what if someone in your neighborhoood was a killer? would you fear him more than the million of other strangers in the city? would you make up stories? our ancestors apparently saw fit to make up legends and tie thewm into religion.

Historical:
vikings treated a grass called wolfbane in a secret recipe. they then chewed the mixture (like tobacco) which chemicaly raised their epinepherine levels and dulled their pain. also tended to make them positively bloodthirsty warriors called berserkers.

Extreme:
extreme PMS? not likely (although some husbands would disagree)
the most likely explanation is the rise of the moon. it affects liquid like the ocean to move, so it also affects the inner ear. some people feel they lose balance but cannot locate the reason for thiss impreceptible loss so they act out. most people are more agressive during the night and especially the full moon.

Werewolves

Yes, I like them. There is a condition some humans have called lycanthropy. A werewolf is called a lycanthrope, and lycanthropy is when a person considers himself/herself to be a werewolf, especially during the full moon. Not too many people seem to know about that, but it is a clinical term, probably used most by psychiatrists. Some stories claim that a person bitten by a werewolf will also become one. Some legends say that it takes real silver to kill a werewolf. You could not kill a werewolf with a cross or holy water. Supposedly, a werewolf is a human being with extra-sharp senses such as sight, hearing and smell, and only becomes a werewolf during a full moon, growing into the size and shape of a vicious looking wolf, including fur and teeth. Werewolves prey on bloody meat, and it is unknown how long it may live. I hope that I have added something interesting to your project.

Don't know if this helps, but I did some studying on the occult in the Middle Ages and found a great story about werewolves in Germany during the 12th and 13th centuries. Apparently there was a cult of men that believed they turned into werewolves at night, then descended into hell to battle demons for the sake of humanity. I recommend a book called "Night Battles" by Carlo Ginzburg if you are interested in exploring that.

Oh my gosh! That reminds me! I was watching this paranormal investigator show on Sci Fi this week and a guy went to this state that is like obsessed with Werewolves. And this family claimed to have caught a werewolf by the throat with this rope they had so the investigators examined the rope and stuff thinking it would be dog blood on the rope and that the family just hurt a poor dog with it but instead it was HUMAN blood on the rope! It was so freaky!

I'll try and find a video on youtube of the werewolf investigation thing I watched.

i remember hearing how werewolves, persay, weren't literally wolves for the most part. don't forget! many people back then were pretty hairy and it was dark, no street lights, etc. okay now, with the coming of the full moon (especially the red moon), people's moods would swing, especially to the side of aggression, people would usually become very, VERY irritiable come to the red moon and were prone to fits of anger, coupled with the hysteria of lycanthropy (were-wolf-ism) people themselves believed they were turning into wolves because of their terrible rage, and well, they would act upon it.

i also remember reading something of invading viking warriors, dressed in fur armor, attacking settlers and small villages with terrible force and speed during the night. once again, i read this a LONG time ago and im not sure of the details exactly. i hope this helps a bit :)

Almost as many people in France (17th and 18thC) were executed for being werewolves as their were for being witches! And that's a lot! Like witches, it seems to be connected to ergot poisoning of rye crops etc...
The Vikings had a werewolf cult called Ulfenar that were like Berserkers. They wore wolf skins over their armour and charged into battle howling!

From what I understand, the idea of werewolves is thought to have started when people hallucinated by eating bread infected with the fungus ergot.
