first you get the p's and the whole number on opposite side. So it will be like 1/2p-3p-4p=54. Then you add on the p's to make it on one p. So it will be -6.5p. Then divide 54 by -6.5 so p will be equal to -8.3.

p= -8.3(rounded)

You need to get all the p's on one side:

1/2p - 3p - 4p = 54

1/2p - 7p = 54

- 6 1/2p = 54

then divide by -6 1/2 on each side

p = 54 / - 6 1/2

you do the rest

1.) Write the equation out:

1/2p - 3p = 54 + 4p

2.) Subtract the like terms on the left side:

-5/2p = 54 + 4p

3.) Subtract the 4p from the right side over to get all the p's on one side:

-13/2p = 54

4.) Divide 54 by -13/2 to isolate p on the left side, and this will also be your answer:

p = -8.31

1/2p - 3p = 54 + 4p

Transpose 3p

`1/2p - 3p + 3p = 54 + 4p + 3p

1/2p = 54 + 7p

Multiply both sides of the equation by 2

2(1/2p) = 2(54) + 2(7p)

p = 108 + 24p

Transpose p

p - p = 108 + 14p - p

0 = 108 + 13p

Transpose 108

0 - 108 = 108 + 13p - 108

- 108 = 13p

Divide both sides of the equation by 13

- 108 / 13 = 13p / 13

- 108 / 13 = p

- 8.307692308 = p

- 8.31 rounded to two decimal place

I assume this equation is

1/(2p) - 3p = 54 +4p --->1/(2p) = 54 + 7p

1/2 = 54p + 7p^2 --> 7p^2 +54p - 1/2 = 0

use quadratic equation

p = 1/2*(-54) +/- 1/2*sqrt(54^2 +2)

Seems rather complicated. Suppose the equation you meant was

(1/2)*p-3p = 54 +4p ---> -5/2 *p = 54+4p

-54 = 13/2*p ---> p =-54*2/13 = -8

1/2p-3p = 54 +4p
*****transpose 4p to the left side of '=' sign
1/2p-3p-4p = 54
*****perform the given operation
-13/2p = 54
*****multiply the equation by 2
-13p = 108
*****divide the equation by -13
p = -8.31

2007-08-16 16:59:46 · answer #6 · answered by acinom 1 · 0 0

to get rid of the fraction, i would multiply everything by 2:

2(1/2)p - 2*3p = 2*54 + 2*4p

p - 6p = 108 + 8p

now combine like terms:

-5p = 108 + 8p
-13p = 108
p = -(108/13) = -8.307

It is not clear whether the p in the first term is in the numerator or the denominator. It makes a difference.
