What was old is new again! They are still around.
"Today, guests are entertained in an updated version of Farrell's turn-of-the-century atmosphere. Staff members are dressed in pin stripped vests, old fashioned ties, and cane hats. The restaurant features the distinctive “old Farrell's” look of a century past ice cream parlor, but with a modernized décor and menu. Many consumers respond to this process--take a look at the success of Volkswagen's Beetle!

There's a very sad story associated with Farrells Ice cream in Sacramento. During an air show On the afternoon of Sunday, September 24th, 1972, a jet airplane crashed into the shop and exploded. A fan was taking pictures and filmed the whole horrible thing.
The final count: Twelve children and 10 adults were killed, including the couple in the car that was struck by the jet. In addition, 28 persons were injured in the devastation. One survivor, only eight-years-old, lost nine family members in the conflagration: both parents, two brothers, a sister, two grandparents and two cousins, and one entire family of four was wiped out completely.

Never been to one. But now live in Sacramento area, and have heard all the stories about when the airplane crashed into the Farrells here. A lot of people got killed. I think they then closed down in this area.

I don't think you have to be a senior citizen to remember Farrells... I was a tiny little thing in the 1980's and remember it. How could anyone forget all the bells and whistles and the big deal they made if it was your birthday??
I don't think they even exist anywhere anymore.

We stopped at a Farrell's in Honolulu on our way to Japan in 1977. My wife and children marveled as I consumed the Pig's Trough and got my certificate for doing so. Sure glad my flight to Japan wasn't the next day. LOL!

Used to frequent one in Fremont, CA when I was a child. Great ice cream, candy and memories! I hear they still exist in Southern California.

Yes, I remember Ferrell's. They used to have the Pig's Trough or something like that. And, they would bang the drum and get everyone's attention and tell them that you and your friends were attempting to eat it. I loved that place.
