They are made out of different minerals from the earth. Some are more powerful than others.

The strong magnetic fields of neodymium magnets can also damage magnetic media such as floppy disks, credit cards, magnetic I.D. cards, cassette tapes, video tapes or other such devices. They can also damage televisions, VCRs, computer monitors and other CRT displays. You should never place neodymium magnets near electronic appliances. These magnets are different from the black magnets on you're fridge. They're more powerful, and should be handled with caution as, you can injured yourself if the magnets are allowed to slam together. They are more brittle than black magnets and can shatters into a million pieces if they slam together by force, and my send pieces flying when they break. They are very strong.

Magnetism is caused by electric current flowing in a circle, basically. If there are a bunch of electric currents flowing in a bunch of circles, it adds up if they're going the same direction and cancels out if they're going all different directions.

The behavior of electrons in an atom is weird: it does not correspond to anything in ordinary experience with objects big enough to touch. So it's not exactly a matter of electrons moving in a circle, but that's basically what it amounts to. Different atoms have different amounts of circular-current-equivalent, and different substances have different degrees of tendency for them to line up.

Generators create electricity when a wire cuts through a line of magnetic flux. Therefore, the more wire you have, the more often you cut a line of flux, and the stronger the magnet, the more lines of flux you have to cut. Since arranging the wire will probably be more difficult than arranging the magnets, I think the extra money on magnets would probably be worth it.
