They're more powerful, and should be handled with caution as, you can injured yourself if the magnets are allowed to slam together. They are more brittle than black magnets and can shatters into a million pieces if they slam together by force, and my send pieces flying when they break. They are very strong.

Magnetism is caused by electric current flowing in a circle, basically. If there are a bunch of electric currents flowing in a bunch of circles, it adds up if they're going the same direction and cancels out if they're going all different directions.

Therefore, the more wire you have, the more often you cut a line of flux, and the stronger the magnet, the more lines of flux you have to cut. Since arranging the wire will probably be more difficult than arranging the magnets, I think the extra money on magnets would probably be worth it.
