2002 Ford Focus San Diego, California. There's a clicking and internet research says CV joint. Auto repair fraud is rampant in this city, I've never had a good auto repair experience. Does anyone know how much I should be charged for this repair so I am at least not financially shafted yet again? And how long it should take, so I can try and budget for the lost wages? Is the internet research true that it would be faster and cheaper to just have a new axle put in? Thanks!

Before you say it, I know I should bring it in for diagnosis first, but in this city that's playing roulette. You spend a big diagnosis fee and lost wages for nothing more than a guess at best or a sales pitch at worst, usually accompanied by scare tactics and stalling. No one I know has found a satisfactory place yet. I used to just visit different shops to confirm/check diagnoses and ended up with a different diagnosis from every shop. Here you have no choice but to throw money at parts and hope for the best.

The last place I went shafted me of nearly $500 in a scam. This place was a member of the BBB, ASE certified, and AAA approved. I couldn't prove it so no one would do anything. So the certifications and plaques on the wall no longer comfort me.

YOU WOULD BE BETTER JUST TO REPLACE THE COMPLETE AXLE ASSEMBLY.

IT COMES WITH 2 JOINTS, 2 BOOTS, 4 CLAMPS, PACKED WITH GREASE AND A BALANCED AXLE SHAFT.

YOU SHOULD BE LOOKING WITH PARTS AND LABOR IN THE BALLPARK OF $195.00 TO $275.00 PER SIDE.

TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.

It would be cheaper to just install a whole new axle. This will cost you more for parts but you more than make it up on the labor. You can go to an auto parts store and purchase the parts or at least get the prices and ask them about a good mechanic to put them in. Look for several hundred dollars for labor and the cost of the part.

good luck.

I live in Alberta Canada and the price here do do your repairs it would be $900 well over $1000.
I find that the only way to not get screwed by mechanics is to educate yourself as much as you can on the problem. This will show them that you are not clueless or someone they want to try and take advantage of.
Have you ever thought of doing the repair yourself??I bet with a good repair book and a weekend you could do it on your own.Maybe you have friends who would be willing to help you get dirty.
The only way to win is to fix as much stuff yourself and stay away from repair shops.I seldom ever go to a repairshop because I can do most of the repairs myself.
If your cannot fix stuff yourself and you are forced to go to a repairshop than you buy the part that they say you require it will save you huge on the markup of the parts.Always get an estimate when possible too.PS good luck

You will be better of to get the new Axel. I had the CV joints replaced on my car some years ago, but the mechanic would not guarantee the replacement. Before long it was clicking again.
If there is a school near you that teaches auto shop, they might be able to repair your car for cost of parts only. You would allow the students to work on it, but they would be supervised by the teacher who (should be) is a certified mechanic.

Change out the axle shaft. Technical term (HALF-SHAFT) they sell brand new here in Iowa for about 60.00 Labor should be about 100-150.00. You can do it yourself with hand tools, it's easy to save your labor. Parts America has an on-line schoolin page that outlines the procedures. A shop may "GANK'" you with "needs a bearin', or tire, or alignment, or a new headlight, or some seat covers, and a dancin' hula girl for the dash to make it go away."
