What is the difference between Flash (Jay Garrick) and Flash Gordon? Are are the two related?

They both appear to have the same logo, but a different story line. What is the deal with these two characters? Is one a spin-off of the other or something?

Jay Garrick was a superhero that could run at superhuman speeds. Flash Gordon was a normal human that travelled to another planet and became a hero after defeating a villain named Ming. The two are in no way related.

I'm pretty sure that neither one of them is a spinoff of the other. Flash Gordon was created in 1934 as a spinoff of Buck Rogers, and he was actually created to compete with Buck Rogers' own comic strip. Flash was created in 1940 and is more of a spinoff of Superman's superspeed (lots of early superheroes had powers that were "borrowed" from Superman's at the time). The names and similar logos were most likely just coincidences.

The Flash Vs Flash Gordon

They could not be any more different. Flash Gordon was a 1970's or early 80's movie, based on a Jets football player who saves the earth. Jay Garrick is the Golden Age Flash from DC Comics.

Unfortunately, yes, they are different characters....and from what I understand about them, also from the same DC Universe, which is doubly ****** up. I cannot express how pissed off I was as a kid when I first watched the movie, expecting all the while that this mullet-head, blonde (meh)football star was going to up wings and start running up walls. He did none of those things - of course - but he DID befriend the cool as hell angel-people, with the really cool, deep-voiced leader....one of the few redeeming qualities of that movie.

As a kid, I loved the movie. It had all the elements a kid would want (without the super-speed...). I was very disappointed it wasn't THE Flash, but it made do. As an adult, that movie failed miserably, totally, and without excuse. Sure, it was made in the 80's - the era in which I grew up - but Star Wars was made in the 70's and pulled off better special effects than that....and Flash Gordon didn't even have super powers! The story was enough to keep an eight-year-old entertained, but failed miserably keeping an adult comic book nerd entertained.

One light controls traffic on the first street; the second controls traffic on the cross street. Usually red flashing means stop before proceeding. Yellow flashing usually means slow and proceed with caution. Some drivers do not slow on yellow.

Not the same. Two completely different comic characters who happen to have similar logos. Go to Don Markstein's Toonopedia, and you will find complete information on them there. For our purposes, Toonopedia is much better than Wikipedia, and people can't change the articles and mess them up.

The biggest similarities are their logos and the fact that rick gordon, flash gordon's son is from central city like barry allen.

different heroes though it's easy to see why people would wonder. flash gordon was a part of the defenders of the earth (along with the phantom etc.) while flash was a part of the justice league (along with superman etc.).

a flashing red traffic light means come to a complete stop... a flashing yellow Traffic light means slow down and precede with caution,,, you don't have to stop... but in my neck of the woods a light that goes from green to yellow then red.. the yellow lights means drive real FAST ~>>>> always, Ladyitch p.s. also,,,if no signal lights are working at said intersection, due to power outage... you treat it as a 4 way STOP!....

They are the same, just as Superman and Clark Kent are the same. Check the Wikipedia reference below
