Hello, we are travelling to Boracay (9/15 - 9/18)and Bohol (9/19-9/22) in mid September. Our route is fly from Manila to Boracay, fly over to Cebu and take the ferry to Tagbilaran, then fly from Tagbilaran to Manila. Since we are making connections at Cebu, I thought of maybe staying overnight (9/18) and exploring the sites - might as well since we are already there. What must see places in Cebu can we visit in only one day? Do we seek a tour guide or do the touring ourselves? Also since it's low season and more budget friendly, we've thought about just purchasing airline tickets and scouting hotels/lodges/inn once we get to Boracay, Cebu and Bohol, then book tours at the hotels. Would you advise that versus purchasing an entire package? This is our first trip back after 11 years so I'm really excited about planning this and exploring our beautiful country! Any insights would be appreciated!
P.S. We aren't sticklers for fancy resorts, as long as there's A/C & safe, we're all good.

Scrap the plan and just go there and play it by ear.

Lots to see in Cebu. The very first place you need to visit is Magellans Cross which is just infront the Cebu City Hall. You can ride a jeep or taxi going there. Beware taxi in Cebu are quite notorious. From Magellans Cross you can walk to the Santo Niño Basilica and if you have time to line up, see the original Santo Niño given by Magellan. A few meters away is the Cebu Cathedral another Spanish built church which was renovated few years ago. Then walk a few blocks away to Fort San Pedro, the smallest Spanish fort in the Philippines. I think the museum is still there. From downtown you then go to Uptown area in Robinsons Mall (you can take a jeep from Fort San Pedro, just ask directions). Infront of the mall is a rotunda park. The monument in the rotunda is the one in the 50 Peso bill (face side). There is also the famous Chinese Taoist Temple but is quite far. In the evening, Tops is the best place to view the city nighlights. The area is along the hillside and is only accessible by taxi or private vehicle.
In the uptown area there are several budget accommodations there. You can try Jasmine and Verbena Pension House along G.Garcia Street near Chong Hua Hospital (a few blocks away the rotunda). Waterfront is too expensive and far from the tourist areas.
When in Boracay and Bohol I suggest you get a package instead since you will be staying there longer. Aside from that you are in a group which can be difficult especially in finding accommodations.

If you plan on staying overnight at Cebu may i suggest you try The Waterfront Hotel. It's a nice place to stay with nearly all the cosmopolitan action taking place there. You can ask the concierge about what/where to tour from there.
Good Luck... ;-)

As soon as you come home, try to seek the assistance of the travel agency available in the hotel where you will stay for the day. From there, you will be able to get package tour.
Hope you will enjoy your stay here :) Take care and GOD BLESS YOUR TRIP!
