Today I went to the doctor for my 36 week check up. I told him that I have been cramping a lot and that my lower back had been acky. He told me that I am starting to thin our and dialate and that is why I am cramping but he didnt check me. He said that he isnt worried though because I am almost term. He also said that the baby is in positon and is engaged but I know that it is time for that anyways. What I want to know is how does he know I am thinning and dialating and does this mean I may go early?

After 36 weeks, if the baby is in the correct position, babies aren't really considered early anymore and do just fine if born.
He probably didn't want to put you through the discomfort of checking you since it isn't really necessary.
Cramping and lower back pain is normal in the late stage of pregnancy. You'll have braxton hicks contractions ( false labor) as your body gets ready.
You can't tell for sure if the baby will come before the due date or after. My son was born 3 days after the doctor checked me and said it would be another few weeks, because I hadn't dilated yet. He was two weeks early.
A friend of mine spent 10 days past her due date, trying everything to get him to come even though she was 2 cm dilated 2 weeks before the due date.
The baby will come when it's ready.

I really dont think it means any thing amazing is about to happen. It means that the process for labor is starting- your body is beginning the natural process to prepare you for labor. It could be you are still a few weeks off from having the baby or that you are only a few days or a few hours.

Each person/pregnancy/labor are different so its really hard to say- Your best bet, talk to your doctor or someone on his staff and ask them these questions.

They PROBABLY will have a little bit more knowledge about what your body is going through than everyone here on Yahoo Answers!

I was 100% effaced and dialated to 2 for 14 days before going into labor.

Since you're 36 weeks, if you were to go into labor now, the baby would be considered term. Anything before 36 weeks is premature. You can go into labor anytime now. It is odd that he didn't check, but not all doctors check everytime. I was checked from 36 weeks on, until I went into labor at 39 weeks 5 days. Next time, ask him to check, if you're concerned, don't be afraid to ask.

I don't know how he could know not checking you. But in all honesty Dilating, effacement truly mean NOTHING! You could walk around for weeks like that. But I can tell you this much with my first one I was like that. My back was bugging me pretty bad so I took a nap to help see if it would ease it off. yeah, i woke up and my water broke. after that 15 and a half hours later I had my baby boy. BUT if you're back is hurting like it is and all you feel is cramping and back pain you may be having back labor which is what happens when your baby is sunny-side up. face up and not face down which in the end is worse pain during full blown labor and delivery than than typical and normal face down. my first was face up like that. just keep a close watch on exactly how you're feeling and how much your back is bothering you. if it starts to bother you too bad go to the doctor or hospital just to get checked b/c you could really be in labor and not know it. b/c sometimes with back labor it's hard to tell. everyone told me how contractions were supposed to feel but mine didn't feel anything like that. no one had ever mentioned the term back labor until the doctor said my baby was face up and that expained everything he said. even my mom who had went through never mentioned it to me until AFTER i had my baby, which really didn't do me much good at that point....lol

if he felt ur stomach that is how he knows where the baby is at and laying and if the baby is low u are dilating and thinning
but people dialate and thin and still dont go till 41 weeks sometimes
just call him if u have any contractions or if u even think ur water broke
bes tof luck and congrats:)

He can't know for certain, but he is probably correct. Your cramping is probably Braxton-Hicks contractions, which start before you go into labor and help your cervix dilate and efface. If they get worse, become regular, or if you start leaking fluid go to the hospital. Congratulations, you are almost there. Good luck.

he was probably just guessing. when i started to dilate i was crampy too. i highly doubt ou'll go that early maybe earlier than due date but not earlier than what's considered full term. i started to dilate when i was 32-33 weeks so when i told my docs i was cramping tehy checked me only because i was early. i was dilated 2 cm unntil 36 weeks when i had him i went in at 6 cm with ym water broke

Hate to say it but he fed you a line of BS if he didn't do a pelvic exam or US to see your cervix.
He's assuming that is what's happening based on that is what "normally" happens with those kind of symptoms. Hope he hasn't been so blase about the rest of your pregnancy.
