Generally speaking...and I mean VERY generally...the people I know who call themselves Republicans have the following in common:
Belief in the free market economy.
Desire for lower taxes.
Support a strong national defense and military.
Desire for less bureaucracy and government control.
Oppose nearly all governemnt "entitlement" programs.
Belief in stiff penalties for crime.
The Party and its polcy wonks, along with special interest lobbyiists, make a lot of noise and can often produce a fractured view of those issues, but those points are what bind rank-and-file Republicans.

During the civil war, the democrats were the slave party. Recently they took on the cause of civil rights and now they pretty much take anyone with a cause.
Republicans have been corrupted by the Christian right and to some degree big business.

There are two things here: 1) the original ideals of the Republican party (which is now long dead) and 2) the present live ideals as currently practiced by Republicans today. If you're wanting the former:

As with any party, the Republican party's agenda changes with the times. Right now, it seems very single-minded: WAR IN IRAQ.

The free market - a la Smith, Ricardo, Say, Schumpeter, Hayek and Friedman.
What daniel doesn't seem to grasp is that while the people with money have more of it, it's also true that there are a lot more people with money.
