I was taught that you should use mineral oil, not vegetable oil, on a cutting board because vegetable oil could go rancid. I wouldn't want that smell in my dishwasher, either, but the repairman said to use vegetable oil, not mineral oil. Any experience with either?

If the smell is backing up thru the drain use some drin cleaner in the dishwasher and run it empty. Then run again to rinse and make sure it is cleaned out. Sounds like your drain is getting plugged or the grey water drains are stoopping up.

Mineral oil would cause the rubber gasket to deteriate thats why I guess he suggests a veg oil.

I wouldn't oil the gasket with anything, just keep it clean with soap and water.

from personal exp, you should Not oil a door seal,
just keep it clean, if it ever starts to drip or leak it,s from lime build up, a mild lime remover will clean it off,
just wipe it off with a soft, cloth once in a while,
i have had mine for 10 yrs it has never leaked,

You're not supposed to use oil at all.
