This is my first baby and I was in L&D last night for five hours w contractions that were 3-4 min apart. They are still continuing today. But, the Dr examined me and said that I was not dialated at all. He also said to be ready for a baby anytime soon. Does that mean a day or two or four weeks? I am confused. How long could these contractions go on without dialation or will I begin to dialate? Any advice from anyone who has gone through this? Thanks!!

The contractions lasted about 60-70 sec.

Walk around a lot and gently bounce on one of those big balls. It'll help move the baby down into the birth canal and start dilation.

When my sister-in-law went to L&D she was already dilated to a 7.

These contractions could die off and you could be stuck for a day or weeks. no way to tell really. or they could kick in and do something. that's the odd thing about labor, it's confusing when it comes to having contractions first. or your body may be the type that may need that extra little push with pitocin or cervidel to ripen your cervix.

if you're lucky your water will just break and there ya go b/c there's no question what's next after that. i had contractions for weeks but nothing in both pregnancies..... then each time after waking up in the morning or after taking a nap i sat up and my water broke that simple.

don't worry about it. i say if you start hurting too bad go back to the hospital and see if there's anything they can do to go ahead and help it along if you're term and having contractions like that. Some doctors will go ahead and at least try cervidel if you're having steady contractions and nothing's happening.

The contractions can go on for a while but keeping busy, walking alot and trying not to worry will help your body relax and bring them sooner. I'm no expert but having been through it 3 times, I'd say you're likely to deliver within a week. Be sure to watch for bloody show, loss of your mucus plug and if your bag of water breaks. If your contractions continue but you still aren't dialated, they will most likely admit you and give you something to help open your cervix. Good luck and congratulations!! :)

Hi I am going through my second pregnancy right now, But with my first one I was in labor for 3 days and was only dialated to one, I was not thined out so the doctor finally decided to induce me. They used a little bitty pill that they insert into your cervix that will thin you and then they will put you on patosine, that helps get you closer to labor. After all this was done I had my little girl six hours later. So ask your doctor about it. Good luck!!!!

please do not rush the baby coming. just relax and loosen up. you being tense, is making your muscles tense and the uterus is a muscle. if u relax, the contractions can more easily do, what they r suposed to do. Try not to get any unnecessary medical interventions. Just enjoy this time alone w/ hubby.

I started having contractions prob. a week or so before i delivered, but they only came around 1 am in the morning. And sure enough when I finally went into labor, it started at 1 am.

It could be anytime, what you experienced was false labor, also known as pre-labor pains.
The baby was probably just positioning its self nearer the birth canaal and possibly turning upside down,(if it hasn't already done that).
Soon can mean a few minutes to days usually.
You will know when your water breaks, I promise you that!
Oh, and don't do as that one person said and do any bouncing, it can harm your baby this late in the game!

It could mean anything. Chances are you'll take a little bit of time though.

Try to stay at home for as long as you can though. How long did the contractions last?

Soon usually means anyday. Try to walk. This usually speeds things up.

My mum sid she waited 5 years to have me (must have been a big disapointment).

But she wasnt pregnant most of that time so I guess this answer doesnt count.

Tell us about your baby when he/she/they arrive.
