hi I have alot of bettas and when you can keep them in small bowls with no areation with success I don't recomed it unless you are treating it for sickness or conditioning it for breeding. I have found that female bettas actually last alot longer than males do, I have had one for about 3 years now although I have had one fish that actually didn't want to live it would cloud it's water on porpose while my other bettas still had there's clean. the best thing you can do would be to get a small tank that has a filter and a light , you can keep multiple females toghether and they will be happy yopu don't really need any decorations although live plants help with keep the water clean and look very nice, If you want a male but don't have a tank just for it you can buy these type of plastic boxes that hook in to another aquarium and make it soo the betta can't attack other fish, yes bettas can survive with filters except if the tank has a really strong current throughout the entire tank with no still parts, all you really need is water a tank a betta and food, bettas have labrynith organs which mean they can breath air kinda like we do so they can live in water without oxygen , but the also have gills so they can act like normal fish too here is a tank that would be perfect for a group of female bettas or a tank for just one: http://www.petco.com/product/11266/Red-Sea-Candy-AquaVase-Combos.aspx

hope I could help good luck!!!

Bettas are also know as Siamese Fighting Fish. I suggest buying a male betta. Male bettas are much more colorful than females, but females get along better with another fish. Never put two male bettas together, or a female and male together. Males will often fight and rip each other's fins apart until one wins.

If you get both female and male, it's very interesting how they mate. As soon as you recognize the female is pregnant, put it in with the male. When you buy a male, you realize it creates this "bubble next" with its saliva. This is where the male puts its eggs into. So when the babies hatch from their egg, they eat the father's saliva as food. They are very pretty as babies because their tails are soo long!

I think a 5 gallon tank is a good size for the betta. You should definitely buy it some plants, just to make their environment nicer. I don't recommend buying a filter, if you want to breed it. You should also keep your betta in a tank with warm water. But nothing over 80 degrees. Bettas are also anabantidae, this means that they can breathe oxygen directly from the air. That means, you shouldn't put your betta in a deep tank, shallow is the best.

You should feed your betta everyday! You can feed it flakes, live food such as brine shrimp or worms, or raw fish/meat.

Males are beautiful but are very aggressive to other Betta's. Females do well as long as you have 3 or more to establish a pecking order. This will level out the aggression. They are tropical fish and need to be in a heated filtered tank. The water temperature should be between 76-82F. You can house Betta's with other peaceful community fish as long as the other fish don't have long flowing tails or fin nippers.
Betta's need to have plants in the tank to lounge on and hide in. Just make sure the plants are smooth and nothing in the tank has a sharp point. Their fins are very delicate and can be torn easily.
As for feeding I feed mine twice a day. Just a small pinch of flake food or 3-4 pellets specially made for Betta's. I also feed them freeze dried blood worms and brine shrimp as a treat every other day. Betta's tend to get constipated easily so I fast mine once a week.
What kind of pump are you talking about? A air pump? It can live with a air pump but you won't need one. They mostly breathe from the top of the tank. But you should def. have a filter. Some people say that they don't do well in currents but I have all of my larger Betta's in tanks with filters and they do very well. Remember you should do weekly water changes if you keep them in a filtered tank. But if they have no filter do water changes about every 3 days.

Follow up** Betta's do not eat roots or plants unless they are starving.. What the person below me has is nothing more than a death trap for his Betta!

Here are the basics
At least a 2.5 gallon tank with filter and heater and a live plant
water conditioner for your water, for
1 male betta
and a few shrimps

or you could get yourself a 10 gallon kit, and are able to put up to 5 FEMALE Bettas in there,
you will need at least 3 of them, because they will choose a so called peckingorder, if you would have only 2, one will dominate the other,
in the 10 gallon you could then also put 2-3 cory cats in there (bottom feederO

Feed your betta's twice a day 3 pellets at each feeding

Do change up their diet you can feed them with frozen bloodworms

Hope that helps
Good luck

I have a 5-gallon betta community tank that I am building up and all I will have in it is one male betta, three female bettas and one mystery snail to eat the algae.

As far as plants go, you can work with either live plants or silk plants. NEVER use plastic plants. I found out the hard way the damage they could do to tearing fish fins and trapping the fish.

Bettas need to be fed at least twice a day and yes they could live with a pump despite being Labyrinth Fish.

Betta's are great. The males follow suit as other species, they are prettier of the two.

The decor is completely up to you. They do enjoy caves or tunnels or what not.

Feed them about twice a day, keep them at a steady temp too. 75-78 degrees for the water.

Pumps make them live longer, they can live without pumps though.

get a spacious bowl/tank and put a plastic plant if you want. i got pebbles before but my betta kept mistaking them for food. im sure they're fine though!
usually males are put alone because of aggresion, yet are very pretty. females are dull colored but can be put in groups.
if you buy your betta food usually the directions will tell the amount needed to be fed.
you dont need a pump really, because bettas can sip in a small amounts of oxygen and live off it for quite a while. just be sure to change the water frequently. you can use a pump though.

i have a male and a female betta (they are in separate tanks) and they are both good but the male is bigger and prettier! they each have one live plant in their tanks. i feed mine once a day, just a pinch of betta food. im not sure about the pump but you could ask someone who works at the pet store you get it at. oh and also if you want more than one betta to live together (i wouldnt really suggest it) then you should get females because male bettas dont do well together or with females. they like to fight. good luck with your betta!!!!!!

pick me for best answer!! please? :)

Yes, they can live with a pump. They'll be much happier in a bigger tank than the ones they like to sell them in at the petshops. Males are generally better because they're more colourful. However if you wan them in a community tank or want a few of them you should get females. Males can be kept in community tanks but most fish will nibble on their fins.

I wouldn't put a Betta in less than 3 gallons even if it is alone because they like so swim around a lot. I keep mine in a large vase with a peace lily in it. He likes to nibble at the roots and swim through them. I have one male alone, because lot of fish will nip at the long, flowy fins of a male betta. Female bettas can be aggressive too, but you can put them in a community tank more easily because their fins are shorter. Pumps are fine with bettas but try to make it hard to hide by the filter where it sucks in the water or it could also suck in a male bettas fins.
