We are finishing our 7th year of sailing and are on our boat Friday-Sunday and for 3 one week periods during the season (7 months on Lake Erie). My interest is based on historical technology and a hands-on way of learning. Sailing is constantly a challenge. Also the sailing community provides humor and friendship. (Note: Contrary to popular belief and political spin, you do not need to be rich to sail.) If you are going to make the leap do so with knowledge. Take a sailing class, get on some boats, and, when buying, get a good book about it and/or take an experienced person with you.

There is no better way to connect to the wind and the water than sailing. It is quiet and meditative. It is a feeling of oneness. It can be relaxing, It can be exciting.
I loved to watch sailboats on the water, so I eventually bought a used Sea Snark for $75 (an 11-foot styrofoam bathtub with sail). Since then I have sailed boats of all sizes and types. I have owned quite a few and rented or chartered others.
How often I sail varies with what else is going on in my life. At times I sailed every other week or so. And I also have "dry spells". I trailer a boat with me whenever I vacation near water -- sailing on various lakes, rivers and bays from the Chesapeake to Lake George. If I fly to a distant vacation, I will rent a sailboat. Sailing is exhilarating. It gets into your blood. Actually, it is already in our blood because we evolved from the sea. So it is reconnecting with our source.

My family is very into water sports. Kayaks, powerboats, water ski, jet ski champions. I have been exposed to water sports in my childhood, going around with my family.

But there are no sailors in my family. I felt it was necessary to have 1 sailor in the family and that it would be me. I started out by reading a boat like sailing for beginners. I absorbed the concepts into my little brain. Purchased a Walker Bay 8. Went out and sailed! YES! I like sailing much better to running the noisy motor and zipping around.

Of course, it took more than 1 try to be proficient in sailing. And I kept at it. Now, I own a small yacht and I sail it whenever I can, like once/month. Sometimes 2 or 3 times.

I enjoy taking friends out for a ride, introducing them to the pleasures of going out to sea and to be overwhelmed by the space around us. That quiet, smooth glide over ripply waters, wind propulsion.... something strangely magical about the whole experience. A beautiful sunset, white sand beaches, eagles flying, beer in hand... There is simply to too that I enjoy about sailing.

I am out on my river boat almost every weekend in the summer, and out on my ocean boat a few times a year. I knew since I was small that a boat was necessary for me. I feel more at peace with myself, and the world in general, on the water than anywhere else. My dad was a commercial fisherman when I was young, and I think I just inherited his love of the water.

It was cheaper to buy my own boat to go fishing, charter boats were getting too expensive, I bought a house, I had a few thousand left over, I knew that I would never get a vacation again in my life, i've had the house & Boat for 17 years, stay small, stay affordable.
