I like Of Montreal...they are really nice. Not sure if they are American, though. Def. not Emo. More like The Shins and The Beatles combined....

Up and comers, there is a group in Ventura, CA called Franklin For Short that has a very cool sound. They have a couple records in the iTunes store, but the pending record that they are in the process of finishing is going to be really, really awesome. They have a couple songs up on a myspace page from it I really highly recommend checking them out. If you're not into the MySpace thing check out "Runaway Horse" and I believe it's called "the Bad Guy" at the iTunes store, but I would check out the new stuff.

and if you haven't done the Shins thing yet they are probably my favorite band of this decade. Stephen Malkmus is really great too.
