You need to be very careful with fish. Goldfish are supposed to be community fish, but most times, i don't see them do well with any other fish other than their own breed and even then, sometimes things go wrong.... The problem is that all scavenger fish are semi agressive to aggressive fish. You should never put any aggressive or semi-aggressive fish in the same tank that houses community fish. If you don't know if a fish is a community, semi-aggressive, or an aggressive fish, you should contact your local pet/fish store immediately. Another problem is that your tank is probably not nearly big enough...Common goldfish can grow to be 9" in length and depending on the breed of your scavenger fish, they can grow to be 5" or more. Until you get this situation figured out, i suggest that you separate the two fish immediatly if you have a holding tank, or another aqaurium, otherwise, your scavenger fish will kill your goldfish. Also, make sure you know what each breed of fish needs before you buy it and whether or not you are capable of providing for that fishes needs. Fish tanks can be very hard to take care of and the fish themselves can be even more challenging as they are VERY sensitive animals. Make sure you know what you're dealing with before you get into buying all kinds of fish and aquariums....

Hi Alexis, The reason they have been fighting since you got your Goldfish is because Plecos/Catfish/Scavenger Fish/Algae Eaters/Bottom Feeders/Suckers etc etc etc call them what you will make absolutely terrible tank buddies for Goldfish & if they are in a small tank it will make matters all the worse. I suggest you either invest in a separate tank for each fish or return one of them to the pet store.

There are almost no ideal companion fish for Goldfish except other Goldfish- they invariably do best with their own type. Both of your fish will need lidded, filtered tanks of at least 20 gallons to thrive.

The first fish you had is being territorial with the new one. You can try adding another fish of the same species to realax the first one. Also try rearanging the decore of the tank. I find this works for stoping the territorial behaviour.
Hope it works!

Ps. I dont think the soupnazi is correct. Ive never heard of a common goldfish getting to over 2 feet long! Maybe a coi, but not a goldfish or a plecotsimus (however its spelled). 75 gallon tank is too much for those two little fish alone!

They are probably fighting because their tank is too small. By a scavenger fish, I assume you mean a Plecostomus, and your Goldfish is probably a Common Goldfish... For those 2 fish, you would need a tank of about 75+ gallons. Common Goldfish get about 2 feet long, and so do the Plecos... Email me about the tank size and I'll try to help you out.

Plecostomus better knows as scavengers eat more algae than anything. I have two of them and they are OK with most fish but I never put them with gold fish. I'd say it's the gold fish because Plecostomus usually attach to the sides of the tank and clean stuff and even try to suck some other fish which the gold fish may not like. Put the Plecostomus in with smaller fish and he should be OK.. I'd only put gold fish in with your other gold fish.

Those fish are probably not good tank mates. Take one them out. Find a tank mate for your gold fish. Ask the pet store they can tell you what to do.

well, having another fish with a goldfish is probably not a good idea becasue goldfish produce much more ammonia in their droppings than other fish. my best advice is to separate them to cause them less stress.

In my experience, goldfish mainly get along with other goldfish.
