I work next to the world's most obnoxious person (who just so happens to have the least work ethics around) and today she insisted on snapping her gum very loudly. I only sit three feet away from her so would it be rude of me to tell her to cut it out?

No...it is rude and obnoxious to snap gum, period!

Walk up to your coworker and say: "Excuse me...but could you refrain from chewing your gum so loudly?" And, if they don't comply with your wishes, file a complaint with your supervisor and let them know that your coworker's bad habit is extremely interruptive to your work concentration.

No one should have to put up with anyone's obsessive/compulsive behavior if it intrudes upon your well-being. I used to work with a man who whistled to every damned song on the radio...Oh my God...that s**t used to drive me out of my mind! And, this may sound bad... but, thank God he died a few years later. The place where I worked obviously didn't forbid whistling or playing the radio at a certain level, so there may be some company policy that restricts her behavior. Check it out...

No it is fine to speak up and the rest of your co workers will probably appreciate it if you do. Remain tactful though when raising such an issue you don't want to be perceived as the trouble maker so just stick to the snapping gum issue and don't loose your cool. It is the gum snapping that's rude. I work with such a person and she's had to be confronted.

no it is not rude . her popping her gum is rude . Just ask her nicely to please stop popping her gum as it is bothering you . If she does not stop then it is time to make a complaint to hr dept where you work . good luck .

OH HECK NOPE...................this is one of the sounds that sends me nutz and sorry but would have flipped about the 3rd time she did it...............lol its OK my kids know what a sod I am about this and KNOW not to do it.........If you have to speak on the phone then I would ensure that she did not do this whilst I was talking.
