No one brand. You are asking for a quick fix answer, but there isn't one. Do your research and find out what you're comfortable with. If you like the Mac OS, then by all means, get an Apple. If you like Windows, look through the brands.

The best laptop for your needs at the best price is not any one given brand. It could be any. Anyone here that is touting one brand over all the others is just a fanboy. Ignore them. Most brands have both quality products and crappy products.

Personally, I have had great experience with my HP business class notebook (model nc8430.) I've had decent but less awesome experiences with various models of Asus notebook in the past. I will agree with some of the other answerers that Sony, HP, and IBM and Apple all make quality notebooks.

I don't like Dells personally. I have experienced a lot of aggravation with Dell and their idiotic ideas of what a computer should be. Also I feel that the quality of their hardware is lacking compared to that of other manufacturers. Anybody recommending a Dell is probably not a "computer person" but rather just recommending what they happen to be using. Dell's advertising targets n00bs and that is the typical Dell user.

Apple

I recommend HP or... whatever IBM became.. I forgot the name. They are pretty much the best in the business as they have a good history. Sony is respectible, and I'd try to avoid Dell unless you have a good reason to take it... usually they'll work alright.. but they're not world-class for quality.

I like the freedom a windows machine provides to do with as you pretty much please, so I dislike apple, but if you know how to use mac OS' and find something you like about them, go ahead and get one.... They're harder to troubleshoot and such in the future, though! :)

if you want good deals on a dell or hp if thats what you want get some coupons on couponmountain.com. of course apple never offers anything because they think the os alone is worth it.

Toshiba makes the best laptops. I would highly recommend a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092, especially for college.
