The lawnmower was invented in the 1800's mostly for sports venues and expansive lawns. Before that, a scythe was used.

There weren't too many real lawns before the mower. Most were dirt decorated with shrubbery. But they had the scythe that cut down crops and they probably used that or something similar.

Scythes and cycles.

The large one like the old man carries for the old year. Then the small ones.
I did a small yard with shears as a kid.

Goats and sheep work well.

I grew up with a reel mower..........but the biggest part of our lawn, or yard was swept......because there wasn't that much grass.......
