To me, headshots are rather confusing. I'm on the East Coast - what is standard here? Just the usual face close up? The 3/4 shot? Or does it not matter? And now I hear the industry is moving away from the classic black and white shot in favor of color photos. Is LA doing 3/4 shots and NYC still doing classic headshots? I'm just not sure which to send out?

Any help from a knowledgeable person would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Well, if you use black & white you will look quite out dated lol! They haven't been used in years. Go here and just look at the types of photos that are being used and have your photographer take them in that format:

Up close and in color - don't really know about NY, but here in LA, we've used color for a number a years now. A 3/4 shot would be a good secondary picture to have as sometimes CD want to see your body as well, but the close up shot is definitely what you need to have as so much of the casting (especially for commercials) is done via the internet with breakdown services and LA casting. So with a 3/4 shot, your face is so small on the thumbnail that the CD sees, they won't get an idea of what you really look like.

I don't think there's only 1 right answer, different casting director's will have different preferences. I personally prefer color shots, but that's because I have red hair and blue eyes and want to show that off, which you wouldn't be able to see in black and white.

As for the 3/4 vs. full face. I think it couldn't hurt to have a mix in your arsenal, but for the most part, I've heard that CD's and agents mostly want to see your face, so up close is better for your main shot and then if you get any additional ones (like for postcards) you can do the 3/4 shot.

To get an idea of what a good headshot looks like, check out Ron Rinaldi's website (I shot with him - highly recommended!!) and click on portfolio.

I'm going to continue using my B&W headshots.
I don't care what everyone else is doing. I've never been a follower!

Hi, I'm just here to warn you that newyorkgal71 thinks she is better than everybody and often answers questions by calling the asker "Hon" which makes her seem more superior compared to everyone else.
