It's an expression of the law that the new king succeeds immediately upon the death of the old one, so there is never any gap. You have to think about it as "The (old) king is dead, long live the (new) king". Or when Queen Elizabeth II dies, "The queen is dead, long live the king". Rather an interesting point in her case - nobody knows exactly when she succeeded to the throne. Her father went to bed one night and was found dead in bed by a servant in the morning. When exactly did he die? Nobody knows. But it doesn't matter... the phrase expresses the truth that there is always a monarch, whoever the monarch actually is.

I've been to Graceland and no, there'll never be any one like him again...

He set the stage for everyone that came after him...

Elvis will remain the King, forever.

Strange isn't it I was never an Elvis fan and I can not understand the fuss. Being a cynic in these matters I suspect that someone has a very good publicity machine and that more money has been made from him after he died than he ever made when he was alive

RIP. I remember the day he died. My mom cried. God bless him. They say he was a very generous, warm hearted human being.
