The songwriting will yield you money and possible notoriety, the poetry will probably not.

Look I don't want to bust your bubble, but Poet's haven't really made money off their poetry in quite a long time, like centuries. They can eventually get teaching jobs and win awards, but that's further down the line. I know a lot, and I do mean a lot, of published poets from US Poet Laureates down to first poems published and I can't think of a one that lives or even augments their income from royalties. Mostly, you get paid in copies, and you can't eat those or pay the rent with them, let alone take care of someone else. And the songwriting, although possibly more lucrative, it's also a tough row to hoe. I'd suggest staying in school and getting a well-paying job and writing poetry and songs on the side.

Do well.

Unfortunately you'll most likely not be able to retire on what you would make with your poetry. If you're serious check out legitamate poetry contests and enter as many as possible.

There are very few people that, while they are alive, can make much of a name for themselves with poetry sales. You could be creative and try to sell them on Ebay maybe. Or perhaps seek out a writing clinic that may lead to networking. You should think about focusing on the song writing and move to an area known for "discovering" new talent -somewhere like Nashville, TN. However, till you are discovered try to find a job that allows you to write and practice. Think newspaper, local magazines, or even a medical trascriptionist.

Good luck, reach for the stars but be sure to know where you are headed!

While it's great that you enjoy poetry and would like to do it professionally, it seems that you may want to consider a job (or if you alraedy have one, an extra one) to support your family. Any kind of art is difficult to make money at right away. It takes time and putting yourself out there a lot before you'll see the benefits of it and maybe not even then. My reccommendation is to get a job or a second job to support your family. Keep with your poetry too but just know that it is probably not going to be what pays the bills.

You want to be a famous poet? Okay, name me three famous poets still alive...? So, you want to be the only famous "living" poet, hmmm? What does that tell you about poetry and fame? Now, give me the name to the person who wrote the lyrics to the top ten songs of all time...or even the top ten songs? See where I'm going with this?

If you want to help your mother, get a real job. Don't stop writing, trying, etc., but don't count on it to pay the bills either.

Last quiz: name the last three poet lauriates for the US....time's up.

keep writing, but only because it's what you "love" to do.

Why would it interest celebrities? Do they know you? Have you performed in public where celebrities heard your work?

Being a poet is NOT a career goal.
It is not a job that will financially support you.

You should concentrate on work. You don't have to be famous to make money.
