What are the chances that there are more? I just eliminate any spiderwebs, dust, etc... by super-cleaning the patio in hopes that I got rid of any eggs, but how can I be sure that there was only one? Do they "travel" in groups of more than one usually? I've been searching the net and cannot find an answer to this question.
I'm totally freaked out. Eek!

Calm down, you will be fine. Black Widows are shy solitary spiders that do not live or band together in groups. I'm really surprised that you just found it out on your patio. They usually stick to cracks and crevices and are rarely found except by chance. We live with them around us all the time, but most are unaware of this because they are very elusive. I normally don't suggest this because I happen to love insects especially spiders, however, It is a dangerous spider so feel free to kill it if it is crossing your boundary. The chances that you will ever find one inside your house is slim so you needn't worry about that. Just make sure you don't have any rocks or piles of wood laying around and make sure you wear gloves when cleaning outside or weeding your garden and you should be safe. Good Luck

The best time to search for more is at night. Unless they are harassed, Black Widows are fairly harmless. Widow webs are easy to identify . . . they're the ones that are REALLY strong and almost feels like thin fishing line. Widows are truly an awesome sight (as far as the animal kingdome goes) to behold

They're solitary, and not all that dangerous even if they bite, unless you're a very small person (under 25 pounds) or frail and elderly.

Cleaning up spider webs and keeping an eye out is plenty. Teach kids to leave all spiders alone, not because they could hurt you but because they eat "bad" bugs.

They do have nests. They like dark undisturbed places like attics and definitely check your garage and shed.
