I remember that we were told that that is where bad boys and girls went. No one ever wanted to go there. A true deterrent. Also do you remember truant officers? Another deterrent that worked back then.

I remember reform schools. Don't actually know anyone who ever went there but remember the threat of them. And, the threat of truant officers. In our neck of the woods, the truant officer was a local constable or his deputy.

They still have reform school but they call it Juvenile Detention and they still have truant officers. They have the authority to put parents in jail or in debt. I do know, that when I was growing up-I tried hard to stay out of reform school. It seems as though a lot of kids now think "Juvie" is a badge of honor. My grandson was a tagger and my daughter and her husband had to pay a hefty fee, along with getting counselling. I can understand the parents having to take responsibility, but my grandson became a hero in his school.
This grandson is now 26 and has 2 beautiful children, so things do work out, but-boy-in the meantime.

I can remember this kid who was always getting into minor trouble being threatened with reform school by his mother. He never had to go and he grew up to be a Pentecostal Preacher. My younger brother hated school and the truant office really did come and get him to go to school. My Brothers son is a High School Teacher LOL! I'd never tell my nephew but then again my older brother may have already spilled the beans. LOL.

Where I lived as a child there was a reform school build near the back of our house could see it from the bedroom window. Mum use to keep the back door locked in-case any of them came poking round. It only took boys

Truent officers were back in the day of the Little Rascles, my mom and dad's time. It was pretty funny watching Buckwheat running from the truent officer.

I remember the threats of reform school. I was too good for any of these activities, of course. Don't they say that if you remember it, you weren't really there?

Yes and I don't think they should ever have been done away with, not in this area anyway. They were a great deterrent years ago, but that's today's softly softly approach.

Never made it to reform school, or it's SoCal equivalent. Had three short stints in juvenile hall, the last time the referee (juvenile judge) telling me that if he ever saw me in his court again I would be locked up until I was 18. I didn't want to find out if he was serious.

We had truant officers when I was in school in the 90's. They were always visiting my neighbors...

I didn't even know there was such a place until I was 25. My gramps( sheriff) and Uncle(texas ranger)would tell the boys if they didn't behave(some really bad) that they were going to be handcuffed to the gatepost for 1hr. in the sun.
No one ever was.

I have not looked back, had forgotten all about the place, blocked it entirely from my mind, the horrible conditions, the inhumane treatment...until now! Thanks for bringing it all up ... now I must call my Shrink and get an appointment....I just knew there was a big chunk of my life missing, and could not find it...thanks for the help..I feel so much better now :-)
