for some people it has to do with allergies. Some people are only allergic to cats, or allergic to both but much more allergic to cats than dogs, and hence they prefer dogs. Also, even though there are dogs that shed, there are many breeds to choose from that shed much less than cats, some that shed not at all. with cats there are only a couple rare expensive hypoallergenic breeds. Dogs can also be trained to go to the bathroom outside, while cats use stinky litter boxes.
other than that it is mostly personality. i like all animals, but i prefer dogs because they don't claw and nip with little razor sharp teeth, and rub all over me awkwardly and leave me covered in hair, they can go on long walks, play games, run around, learn commands, lay in bed with me without giving me an allergy attack, and my dog in particular is very loyal and protective, we kind of "need each other" where as most pet cats are very independent and only come around when they want something from you.
of course, there are some dogs that are annoying, and i dont much like those. i have also met a few cats in my life that were very affectionate and emotionally needy and i liked them.
it depends.

Personality. Dogs and cats typically have different sorts of behavior and personality characteristics. Dogs tend to be more openly and exuberantly affectionate, more obedient, and trainable. Cats tend to be more independent, aloof, and not readily amenable to training, although they are conditionable. Since people also differ in their personalities and preferences, some people only feel an affinity for either dogs or cats. And some like both. And some like neither.

dogs are more useful and helpful, although they could be a mess sometimes you can always learn how to dicipline a dog. With a dog people can do many more things with it that you cannot do with cats such as jog with it, go to the park with it, beach, they go after balls, and they protect the people. Cats are cute pets too however theyre not as useful as dogs.

Well I don't think it's possible to validate your question, because some people may feel vice versa. But to answer it if it were true, I would have to say dogs are more social, more loyal and overall, more playful/active than cats. Dogs tend to give their owners the constant companionship, attention and loyalty you would expect from "man's best friend."

They say it has to do with admiring a "male" role model or personality... Gee, you tell me what I admire. I have 2 cats, 1 dog, 2 birds, 1 turtle, 6 lizards, 2 fish and 1 snake...

Cats stink worse than dogs. Plus the way they rub all over you is annoying.
Dogs can be trained and they love you unconditionally.
