Do you think that the whole story would develop out differently if Harry got sorted into Slytherin instead of Gryfindor in the first book?

Of course. It would have a domino effect on the whole series. Either Ron and Hermione must be in Slytherin, too, or they would still be friends despite being in different houses (but how they would sneak out of their dormitories, I don't know). Snape would have to be nice to Harry being the Head of Slytherin House and where would Draco be if that becomes the case? Furthermore, Harry would become alienated with every other major characters in the series especially his parents, Sirius, Hagrid, the Weasleys, etc. all of whom were in Gryffindor. And to top it all, he would not be friends with Fred and George Weasley, and THAT would definitely make the whole series BOOOOOORRRINNNGG!

Of course the story would've been much different. Harry's choice to be in Gryffindor was a crucial part of the plot. His friendship with Ron and Hermione and even Neville helped him very much in the final battle. He would've probably made friends in Slytherin as well, had he been sorted there. But do you think those would've been real friendships?
The Prophecy about him and Voldemort wouldn't have allowed that part of the story to be different because Voldemort wanted to kill him more than anything else. But would he have had any real friends on his side? And Dumbledore's reaction towards him would've changed.
It's been made pretty obvious through the books that the House you're sorted in is a crucial part of your life. You can change and switch sides (like Snape did) but the House you've been in will still affect your life.

Like yeah, If harry got sorted into slytherin, it would be like saying your choice doesn't matter at all in what type of person you want to be. And that ain't right. It would be like labeling you for life like a loser or a cheat and you cant do anything to change at all.
As dumbledore said to harry and so has harry said to his son, Its the choices you make that determines where you'd go and who you'd want to be.
Also i don't think harry would have made it without Ron and Hermoine.
And i can't imagine snape not disliking Harry. So Harry won't probably last a day at Hogwarts before being expelled. The temptation would probably be to great even for snapes to resist.

yes because harry potter would have been a different person. harry would have been "evil or bad" if he was in slytherin because he had a CHOICE which is key to the whole book. he CHOOSE to be in gryfindor

I definitely think so. For one thing, who is to say he would have pulled Gryffindor's sword out of the hat in the 2nd book? And the sword probably wouldn't have been used in the last book. And maybe Harry would have gone evil in Slytherin. But I think Harry being a Gryffindor was a very vital part in the stories.

To play Devil's advocate I could see how the basic premise would be the same. Good over evil. How the books would have played out to get to that final result would have been vastly different.

It would prob. make for an entirely different series, but in the end I think that the final resolution would have still been the defeat of Voldemort.

of course it would! instead of being ron and hermoine's friend he would have been best friends with malfoy...not to mention snape would also be happy as a clam that harry didnt wind up like his father in gryfindor, but in slytherin like him. although who knows....dumbledore would probably have a fit if harry wound up in slytherin cuz he'd be afraid that the part of voldemort's soul in harry was stronger than he thought and he'd be afraid that harry would wind up being evil

Definitely not. Because of the 'Prophecy' .
Perhaps Ron and Hermione will also go to Slytherin, with a little brainy twist to the proceedings in the series.

yes of course, because then he probably would have never met hermione and ron and they wouldnt have become best friends, and most of the adventures that harry has been on has been with ron and hermione.
