Things to do:

Step back in time by visiting the historic Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, the "King of the Missions", and Heritage Park. Regional talent is proudly displayed at the Oceanside Museum of Art, while the sport and lifestyle of surfing is celebrated at the unique California Surf Museum. The Audubon Buena Vista Lagoon is the perfect place to take an educational walk through a rare, protected coastal bird estuary. Shop for a wide variety of fresh, local, homegrown, organic produce and scrumptious baked goods at the Farmers Market in historic downtown every Thursday morning.

To eat: there's a pier and marina in Oceanside that are nice to walk on/at, and there are nice restaurants there too. Weather in late Aug/early Sept will be lovely for walking in the evening or night there. Several of the restaurants have outdoor dining.

You can rent boats at the adjacent marina if that interests you.

Lots of nice beaches in Oceanside. But for real fun I hope you have a car as there are lots of interesting things outside the boundaries of the city of Oceanside.

I don't think the responder above lives anywhere near Oceanside. They described Catalina as "near"...well, it'll take you several hours to drive to the point where you can take a ferry to Catalina, and you'll have to get there at least an hour before you leave, and the ride on the ferry is about 3 hours. So if you think a half day trip is "near", well then I guess it is. For me, "near" means within an hour or so. Universal Studios is north of LA so in normal traffic that's about 3 hour drive one way. All the other things are within an hour.

And although Buena Vista Lagoon is near, in Oceanside, you should be forwarned that it's also adjacent to a busy freeway interchange of highways 5 and 78, somewhat ruining the peace and quiet aspects. Whoever let the freeways be built there, well, lets just say it was not an environmentally sound decision.

Oceanside is a town geared towards Marines, so it's skimpy on the touristy stuff. There's a great Cuban Restaurant on Coast Highway. Surf Museum on Coast Highway. The beach. Rent a boat, etc. A great place for breakfast is the Beach Break Cafe, but get there early because the line gets very long.

Yosemite Nat'l Park in commonplace Ca. See Ansel Adams photograph's for reason. San Francisco, downtown (the Embarcadero?) and excursion nightlife by ability of Trolley. conventional Studios in So Cal, that could be a brilliant social gathering place besides as studio excursions. The Magic fortress in Hollywood, get tickets early, they 'are spendy' yet well worth it. Malibu coastline, while you're into huge call(lett)s residences Disneyland, the unique w/inn around the line that makes use of overhead tram to get into the park. San Diego Wild Animal Park and SeaWorld and previous city! and for a spendy 6 direction 2 hour meal attempt DePalma's Italian Village close to Corona. Reservations may well be as much as 9 months ahead. remember those span approximately 4 hundred miles from North to South
