I have NO IDEA what gorgeous tropical looking flowers I see out in this person's yard every time I pass by their house on the way to work.
But they are VERY tall, atleast 6 feet, lots of beefy leaves flowing over the sides--the flower appears to be light orange at a distance.
I WANT THOSE IN MY GARDEN !!! :-)
hey, got any idea what these might be??
thx

Probably Canna. I would stop by and ask them. If its a canna they may give you a piece of it. You never know until you ask. I have gotten flowers that way and I have had people knock on my door asking about plants and I have given them cuttings so give it a try.

I like the Canna suggestions, if the leaves are wide and huge. Cannas flower in spikes of flower clusters and usually are an extremely bright color and very tropical looking.

Sunflowers are usually pretty recognizable... large central disk and petals all around. It's an annual but people plant them every year so might look like it's perennial!

Another idea is the tithonia, or torch flower. It has bright flowers in oranges and reds, large leaves, and comes in tall varieties as well as dwarf. It attracts butterflies by the gazillions which is one of the reasons I grow it. Here's a photo:

Some tall Canna's have orange flowers, Maybe Amaranth, I'm growing the six foot red and green variety, but there is an orange variety. Or you could looking at a Castor Bean, mine are higher than my eaves, about 10 ft (with reddish orange seed pods) and a month more growth till frost around here. "Skyscraper" corn and some of my other ornamentals tassel at 10 ft. Several of my sunflower varieties reach 10. RScott

I have a really large hibiscus plant or you could say tree, these grow very large and depending on how they are trimed they could look like a bush or a tree they have very large leaves and flower red, yellow, pink or various colors of tropical looking flowers. They are said to be picky plants although I feel they are great because if they start to die off let it they will soon grow back to natural states.

It sounds like Canna Lilies...some have green leaves, and some have purple leaves. They are very hardy & multiply like crazy since they are a bulbed plant. They require little care too! Good choice for a tropical, easy growing plant.

You can find them at any garden store and if anyone you know has them they would probably be more than grateful to give you a few. They spread like mad, but they are definately worth having.
