Who are "they" and why do "they" say these things

"they" is everyone else and they say those things because they are not you.

"they" are the creatures that prowl on the outskirts of
society and in the parallel universe. Just like yahoo answers,
they say those things because they can be anonymous.

My Mother-In-Law, bless her soul, was the worlds best in the "theys". She would never give her sources, I often wondered is she even had sources. I think with her, when she either heard a rumor or had a suspicion about something, then "they" said ........ It was difficult to argue with the "theys".Funny now that I think about it!!

I've often wondered this question myself. In fact, once in the 80's I sent David Letterman a letter asking him what people are talking about when they use this phrase hoping he would have a funny comeback. Unfortunately he didn't answer my letter.
