My Mother-In-Law, bless her soul, was the worlds best in the "theys". She would never give her sources, I often wondered is she even had sources. I think with her, when she either heard a rumor or had a suspicion about something, then "they" said ........ It was difficult to argue with the "theys".Funny now that I think about it!!

I've often wondered this question myself. In fact, once in the 80's I sent David Letterman a letter asking him what people are talking about when they use this phrase hoping he would have a funny comeback. Unfortunately he didn't answer my letter.
