There is this classical piece that I hear around Halloween a lot, but I have no clue who the composer is or its title. It starts out slower and goes faster and faster ... it sounds kinda scary / sinister and is played loudly ... cymbals and all. I could hum it, but humming doesn't transcribe well. I realize this isn't much to go on, but perhaps someone has an idea.

I think the strings are played pizzicato ... it sounds like they are plucking the violins & cellos in parts.

Probably "In the Hall of the Mountain King" by Grieg from Peer Gynt. Try this link and see if it is the one you are talking about: http://www.amazon.com/Grieg-Peer-Suites-Holberg-Suite/dp/B000001GJV/ref=pd_bbs_2/103-8446861-4195800?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1187291723&sr=1-2

Can you hum a few bars? Probably Dance Macabre by Carmile Saint Seans ( the same composer who wrote Carnival of the Animals)

I would hazard the guess that it's either Mussorgsky's "A Night on Bald Mountain" (a huge Halloween favorite) or Saint-Saen's "Danse Macabre."

With very little information to go on, my first instinct was Saint-Saens' Danse Macabre, even before I saw another's response to your question. I even remember hearing it for the first time in elementary school music class circa 1969. And, of course, the occasion for the music teacher to play this opus on a primitive public school turntable with a bad stylus was---HALLOWEEN!

It *could* be the theme from the film "Psycho" by Bernard Hermann; I've heard orchestras play it on the radio. But the other suggestions here are very plausible.

It sounds like "Night on bald mountain" by
Mussorgsky or "Danse Macabre" by Saint Saens.

Most likely it's Bach's Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor, a popular tune during Halloween due it being a supposed "Dracula" theme.

I'll take a stab at this one: Modest Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain."

It could also be “Danse Macabre” by Saint-Saens. You can hear a sample here -
