I have a '94 Mazda Protege, manual transmission. When I start the car, I hear a loud squeaky sound - its sort of cyclical. (It sounds like something is spinning). I'm told that it could be a belt or a broken water pump. The engine temp. is also running slightly high. The squeak goes away as I shift into 2nd gear and begin driving, then returns when I am parking the car.

to see if it's your belt squeeling let the car idle and while squeeling take a glass of water and pour it on the belt and if the noise goes away you have a bad belt, if the noise doesn't go away you will know it's the waterpump.

Look underneath the vehicle for signs of a coolant leak. If you see coolant, then your water pump may be at fault. Usually you will not hear the loud squeaky sound until the bearing in the water pump has completely given out; at which point you must IMMEDIATELY replace your water pump. More than likely it is a loose or worn belt. Tighten or replace as necessary.

Your diagnosis is probably correct. The fact that the car is running hot leads me to believe it is the water pump. I would still see if you can get a free estimate from a garage. Don't want to replace a water pump and just need a belt.

Your serpentine belt is loose (worn). This belt drives your water pump, so it's not pushing water for cooling. After you pick up speed the air flowing thru the rad is helping keep it cool.

Get it replaced or at least checked before you crack the head from over heat!

Make sure that the pulleys are aligned correctly and that the belt is properly tensioned. You should be able to move it about 3/8" to 1/2" by applying hard thumb pressure midway between the pulleys. Also make sure that the correct belt was installed, get the numbers off the belt and make a couple of phone calls. If the noise persists, try using Belt-EZ or one of the commercially available belt lubricants.

If you are losing a little coolant all the time, then I would say the water pump. If the coolant is always full, then I would say the belt. Have it checked out by a mechanic, he can tell you which it is. good luck.
