any suggestions for foreign horror movies? It's for the foreign film club so it needs to be either not rated "R", or unrated and appropriate for high school.

last year we watched "a tale of two sisters", but it's rated R and our advisor this year actually checks the ratings on movies/ cares what we're watching. anything along the lines of that would be great, or something Grudge-like. (preferably a suspense/ psycological horror but whatever you can come up with.)

The best recommendation I could give you for a high school class is the Russian horror movie, VIY (a/k/a THE VIJ or SPIRIT OF EVIL). It's derived from Nicolai Gogol's story of the same name and tells the tale of a young priest is ordered to preside over the wake of witch in a small old wooden church of a remote village, which means he has to spend three nights alone with the corpse with only his faith to protect him. There's no gore, no nudity... it's just creepy and has some very cool imagery.

It appears to be out of print on DVD, but I'd guess there must still be copies to be had without having to spend too much.

I'd also suggest you proceed with caution on the contemporary Asian horror movies that have been suggested. Many of them are definitely R-rated for violence. One possible exception is an amazing older Japanese horror movie called ONIBABA, which is available from Criterion Collection.

Both VIY and ONIBABA are definitely suitable for teenagers.

Audition is massively over rated, I should point that out. Also, it just wouldn't be appropriate for the setting you described.

I'm not sure about the availability, but I would recommend a Romanian/French film called "Ils" (aka Them in the US.)

I saw it at a film festival and I really enjoyed the way it was shot to base the scares in the film on the mood and setting rather than just cheap scares, but in a way that wasn't just mimicking the Japanese style.

Nekromantik- Jorg Buttgereit, Germany 1987; you'll never see anything like it. La Cabina- Spanish 70's short that gave me the creeps Riget by Lars Von Trier; not quite horror but pretty damn creepy nonetheless. Mindblowing. Les Diaboliques- French methinks... Spoorlos (the Vanishing) Dutch methinks... Dia de La Bestia-Spain 80's, hi-LARIOUS horror!

My top three local horror movies here in the Philippines are:

1. Ouija (about ouija boards)
2. Sukob (about having 2 marriages the same year in a family. It's believed to be bad luck here.)
3. Feng-Shui (I bet you know Feng-Shui from the Chinese.)

Not exaggerating, but they're a lot scarier than "Grudge", "Eye", & "Ring".

Does it have to be in a foreign language? Used to have some cracking Japanese and Ggerman horror films on tape, but got lost in a move. If you like a laugh, Braindead and Bad Taste are New Zealand films and as funny as you like, with loads of mess.

Try out this 1964 film.

Kaidan

It's a bunch of creepy short stories from Japan. By today's standards it should probably be rated PG-13.

The Devil's Backbone is great. Pan's Labyrinth is by the same director and not as freaky, but is supposed to be the sequel.

Go for Thai horror movies!

I still remember "Shutter" till today. The same directors are bringing a new movie "Alone". It's out soon, I think.

Update: Jeez, dude/woman, whoever it is who gave us all a thumbs-down: If you arent the answerer, I suggest you get a life.

Echo is good and scary. Eye 2 is not an adult film. Your teacher may want to try it.
