I need to start a website but I have no idea where to begin. I make and sell custom cakes so I need a website to display my work and info. Nothing fancy though just some pictures and my contact info and maybe a bio,but thats it. So does anyone know where to go from here and if this is something I could myself?

There are places that will host web pages for free (you pay by putting ads on your page). Of these freewebs.com is the most well know. It has a page builder that works a lot like front page for windows, which with some effort you could build your own web page. It also can be run on html input only but I would advise agnst that unless you know html.

I'll preface the following by saying that I'm a computer programmer with many years of experience, but I am self-taught with HTML - - the "language" of the internet - - as are many other people.

I went to the library, got an "easy" book on HTML programming, read the basics, tried a few things on my own (you can write simple HTML programs on your own computer without even being hooked-up to the internet!), and did web searches or looked at other websites for hints, explanations, etc.

To view any webpage in HTML, just go to whatever webpage you want, then, in Internet Explorer (your browser may be different), click on "View" (near the top of that web page's browser window), then click "Source"; it'll look strange and even incomprehensible, but that is what the given webpage looks like without the "interpretation", if you will.

If you use the software listed in the other "answers", you need not ever see or use the "View/Source" code, unless you want to. Personally, I prefer to do everything directly, rather than use a program, because the programs typically add tons of useless HTML that makes it much bigger than it has to be, but, again, I have the background to do that; you might not. But, keep this in mind: many famous websites were started by people who knew nothing about the internet beforehand.

"Yahoo Geocities" offers a totally free webspace. It will have advertisements and banners and stuff, but, who cares? It's FREE, and it'll give you a great starting point! If it's to your liking and you find it easy to use, then you can consider getting your own domain from them or someone else! Try it! Whattaya got to lose? :)

Starting a web site for a business is not as easy and most people think it is.

Creating a personal web site is not a big deal - yahoo, google, and many other sites provide you the tools to do that.

But, unless all you want on your web site are pictures of your product, a phone number, and that sort of stuff - static information and no online orders, then what you are talking about is the development of computer software, databases, etc.

Then, you have to figure out the financial vulnerabilities you will add - how to keep credit card information, etc. private so that hackers cannot get the information.

It is going to be less hassle to find a ___RELIABLE___ web development company and hire them to set up (and probably manage) the web site, than for you to learn all the information about software, hardware (how much bandwidth? how much disk and memory? what web server? what patches? what needs to be done to harden the setup against hackers? what needs to be done to stop Vandals, etc.)

Think of it this way. One can't just walk down the street, find an empty field, and say "Oh, I think I'll open a store here" and quickly go into business.

Likewise, one cannot quickly get a company up and going on the Internet, by their self.

On the other hand, in the "real world", one might find companies who can bring in pre-fabricated trailers or buildings, find lawyers to help you get incorporated and get all the necessary permits, find Realtors to get property purchased, etc.

Similarly, you can find web developers, domain registration companies, etc. ... but even hiring experts, I wouldn't expect it to be quick or easy.

Microsoft Frontpage is the software to learn. Mostly putting pieces together without having to edit the html.

But you still have to learn how to use the software and do the uploading. Purchasing a domain name. (.com, .biz etc.) and a hosting plan for the website.

There are hosting companies that will help you get started. Check them out.

Good luck cake lady.
