Long before there was a comic book hero called Ghost Rider, there have been stories about Spirits that hitch hike on roads at night. The stories go all the way back to horse and buggy days. Typically, the ghost appears to be in distress. Lost, crying, or stranded. A good samaritan stops to give the spirit a ride. Sometimes the spirit will disappear while the vehicle is moving. Sometimes it will tell the driver to stop and the ghost will get out. Several stories will have the driver return to the drop off point for some reason (ghost left her jacket in the car, driver was attracted to the ghost, etc.) In the light of day, the driver will find a cemetery or a house. When the driver speaks to the local resident, he will discover that the person that he gave a ride to has been dead for years.

1. Ghost Rider is the name of several comic book series published by Marvel Comics, and of several characters in the Marvel Universe.

2. Song from the 2002 Vapor Trails album from the band Rush. Describes the "self healing" journey that Rush band-member Peart engaged in after the tragic death of his daughter in 1997 and his wife in 1998. Peart is said to have traveled thousands of miles over North America by motorcycle during this time.

A ghostly being of some kind riding a horse, or maybe a motorbike. Probably not just one kind of thing.

"Ghost Riders in the Sky" by Johnny Cash, is a great song.

A comic book character, which a recent movie was based on. Also a character mentioned in an old (50's or 60's) country western song, that was also used in the movie. Not sure if the comic was inspired by the song or not.
