The reason it is pumping low is because the oil pressure is low. The oil pressure is low because the engine is tired and needs rebuilding. Changing the oil pump is an extreme waist of time and money. You nearly need to remove the engine to do it. At that point you need to rebuild it.

The mechanic is correct. If the engine stopped because of low oil pressure it is toast anyway. If you just have low pressure replace the oil pressure sensor and go to a thicker oil 40 or 50 weight.

I agree that you need a new oil pump. You might get one that has a higher pressure. If you keep running the engine, then sooner or later, it will need to be rebuilt or replaced.

when engines get worn, they will also lose oil pressure, because tolerances are not as tight and more oil will flow and reduce the pressure of the line. With the age of the car, and I'm sure that it has seen some hard driving, just by the model that it is, most likely, it does need to be rebuilt.

Start with the oil pump and see if you can get some years out of it. You can also go with a thicker oil and see if that helps some. good luck.

I'd certainly need to know in PSI. what your oil pressure is to begin with. Idle pressure is generally 6 - 10 lbs. lower than at 1000 rpm. I'm shooting from the hip but a minimum of 20 psi. @ 500 rpm and 35 - 45 psi. at 1000 rpm is a very vanilla bracket. Your mechanic should be able to tap in your oil system with a pressure gage to evaluate exactly what's going on.
It you're not in that bracket try a new Melling oil pump before you junk the motor.

Changing the filter is easy. I'd start there.

Make sure there is enough oil in it.

If it's the oil pump, them you may have caused more damage than just replacing the oil pump.

On older cars pulling the engine was the easiest way to replace the oil pump.
