What happened to fortune tellers at the fairs? I haven't seen any in a long time and was wondering.

At many Fairs you'll find three types of readers. Yes, there are those that are fakers with a good patter script. Then there are those with some talent, little education as to how to use it, and a modicum of greed that taints any reading they do. Finally there are those that are completely honest and by the book, literally. They have no talent, they charge for the reading, and they have, to a great extent, memorized the books on Tarot, palms, etc.

There isn't a complete reading in the lot.

At least in the old days there was flamboyance and theatre in readings done during fairs. Now-a-days, most of the readers could have stepped right out of the crowd roaming the fair. The art of giving the querist memories, if nothing else, is dying.

Also, a very mundane addition. A booth at a fair can rent at $100 USD. Having to move the product to make any kind of profit can screw up anybody's head.

I haven't seen fortune tellers at the local fairs either, except for actual Psychic Fairs.

fear of lawsuits? I remember a school fair where older students took turns as the "fortune tellers" to younger kids- ended up getting a lot of takers more for the entertainment value ("you will meet a clown with three noses and pink nail polish") - but it was free and none of the kids took it seriously... at real fairs for money..well...

Well, over the years there business just kind of went away. When your fortune is just a click away on the computer who wants to go and pay money for it at the fair. Also, no one really believes in them anymore. Its automatically assumed that it is a scam, and unfortunately alot of the time it is.

They probably did not want to spend so much time and not get enough compensation. They do better with their own business rather than out at the fairs.

most fairs don't want physics around they are all family oriented and people think that physics are working with the devil but that is not true people in general are a fried of things they don't understand and having a physic gift is beyond there understanding

They've been sent to prison for fraud or burned at the stake for having real powers.
