The midwest is called "midwest," because at one point in time what is known as the midwest was considered the west. Everything else belonged to France and/or Spain. As we acquired more and more territory, what was considered west changed according to the location of our border.
We don't have a mid-east because the early US was quite narrow. They had west and east of the Appalachains.
It is kind of strange that there is no mideast. Of course, there isn't much of a northwest, either (despite the name of the university).
Haha. Good question, though. I starred you.

Assuming you are talking about a region in the United States (as opposed to the Middle East with Israel, etc.).
I don't know, but I would speculate that it's because the US expanded from the east to the west. So, what was "the west" in our early history had to be distinguished from what later became the West. So it was called "the Mid West". In the same way, the Northwest used to be Minnesota, but as the US expanded the (Pacific) Northwest became Washington, Oregon, etc.

The Middle West is the region in north central U.S. I think the West part goes back 2 the early 19th century when the Northwest Ordinance was cre8d, of which became the western part of the country prior 2 the LA Purchase. The st8s in that region r ND, SD, NE, KS, MN, IA, MO, WI, MI, IL, IN, & OH.
The Middle East is a region in Southwest Asia. I think it used 2 b called the Near East, in comparison to the Far East (East & Southeast Asia). Nations in that area include Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, the Palestinian territorys, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, & Pakistan.

Are you talking about in the US? Probably because the country was settled on the east coast first, and gradually spread west. "The east" always meant back towards the Atlantic coast, but "the west" meant towards the frontier. As the frontier moved further and further west, the people needed ways to describe which part of "the west" they meant. So we got "midwest", "far west", etc.

People settled fro the east, so the mid-west was originally their west, so when they figured out there was more west, they changed the name to mid-west

Originally the U.S. was all in East. Then as it expanded, it expanded to the West. The midwest referred to territory to the west but not as far as the Pacific Ocean.
