well...1/2 is how many thirds? Take 3 times the numerator and denominator and you get 3/6. Now take the numerator and denominator for 2/3 and multiply both by 2....4/6. So 3+4=7
3/6+4/6 = 7/6 = 1 and 1/6 + 7 = 8 1/6

To make the arithmetic as easy as possible, first add the

whole numbers together, and THEN add the fractions:

3 1/2 + 4 2/3

=7 + 1/2 + 2/3 You now have to add 1/2 and2/3, which you

do by finding the lowest number which 2 and3

will both go into without leaving a remainder.

This is 6, the lowest common multiple of 2

and 3. to turn 2 into 6, you multiply by 3, BUT

you must also multiply the top number, 1, by

3 as well. To turn 3 into 6, you multiply by 2

BUT you must also multiply the 2 by 3 as well, so:

7 + 1/2 + 2/3

= 7 + 3/6 + 4/6

=7 + 7/6

=7 + 1 1/6

=8 1/6. Hope this helps, Twiggy.

You must find the common denominator of 1/2 and 2/3.
Meaning the bottom number that can be added together.
Other than decimals, one cannot add 1/2 + 2/3.

It's often done by trial and error.
Double the top and bottom of 1/2=2/4. The same for 2/3=4/6. Is that common? NO.
Triple the top and bottom of 1/2 =3/6. Double the top and bottom of 2/3 =4/6. Now you see the common number 6.

Thus, you have 3 4/6 + 4 4/6. Add the two =7 7/6. Now reduce the fractions to their lowest common denominator.

7/6 is more than the whole number 6. So subtract 6/6 from 7/6==1, a whole number. Add 1 to 7=8.
Now you have left 1/6. This cannot be reduced any further, so 1/6 +8=8 1/6.

the first thing you need to do is convert from mixed fractions to whole fractions. Do this by multiplying the whole number by the denominator of the fraction, e.g.:

3 1/2 = (3*2/2) + 1/2 = 6/2 + 1/2 = 7/2

So, your problem becomes 7/2 +14/3 = X

You now need to find the lowest common denominator between your two fractions. For denominators which are both prime numbers, simply multiply them together, so in your example the lowest common denominator is 6. Multiply both fractions by the appropriate fractional version of 1 in order to convert both denominators to 6.

(7/2 * 3/3) + (14/3 * 2/2) = X
21/6 + 28/6 = X
49/6 = X

Check for common factors between your numerator and denominator, and clear them. In this example, there are no common factors. Convert by division to mixed fractions, if required.

49/6 = 48/6 + 1/6 = 8 + 1/6 = 8 1/6

turn
1/2
and
2/3
to x/6's so they are the same denominators
like this 1/2 x 3= 3/6
then 2/3 x 2= 4/6
add 3/6 and 4/6 together= 7/6= (1 1/6) because 6/6 is a whole and we have 1/6 left over.

now add the 3 and the 4 whole ones together to 7
add the 1 1/6
equals 8 1/6

just one way.

well, to be able to add the 2 fractions u need to make them similar so u want to make a common denomenator(the bottom #) so it would be six so u have 3 3/6 + 4 4/6 so now u add and get 7 7/6 thats an improper fration so it would be 8 1/6

3 1/2 = 7/2
4 2/3 = 14/3

so now you have 7/2 + 14/3
Find the common denominator or 3*2 = 6
7/2 * 3/3= 21/6 ( When you multiply a number by one, you dont change the value of that number)

14/3 * 2/2 =28/6

21/6 + 28/6 = 49/6 or 8 1/6
