Hey,

My Hard drive light would randombly blink or stay on for long periods of time randomly when files arnt even in use from the hard drive, im quite computer illiterate, is this spyware gathering information or what?

I've got norton that came with the laptop (bought last month) and spyware s+d and ad-aware

Would could be causing this?

This is quite common and NOTHING to be alarmed about.

A lot of programs stored on the hard drive do automatic updates from the web. (Norton, Windows Updates, Java, etc.)

Some programs periodically do auto backups to the hard drive.

Programs can be scheduled to run in the background and must access the hard drive - like some Windows maintenance programs for example (defrag and others from scheduled tasks)

I doubt if it is spyware gathering information, but update and scan your computer with your Norton Anti-virus program, then
update and scan with Spybot Search and Destroy, and finally
download, update and scan with a program called Ad-aware. from Lavasoft.
