There already is a section called "Homework Help".
Kids these days are not taught how to look things up. The schools are too busy teaching kids how to pass standardized tests to keep up with President Bush's "No Child Left Behind" Act that they don't have time to teach them how to learn.

I asked this same question in the "Physics" section and got totally flamed by people. I am glad to know that there is someone else who thinks a little like me. One of the people who actually answered my question instead of just insulting me suggested that we ask Yahoo to create a special section devoted entirely to homework questions. While that may keep those questions out of these forums, it also opens up the possibility that kids will look here before trying to figure things out themself. I'm not sure what the answer is, but I agree with the sentiment behind your question. In fact, I've actually used Google to answer some of the questions posed in these forums - whoda thunk it!

an excellent question to which i fear the only answers are the availibility of the internet during homework time, disinterest of the students in the subject matter, and the willingness of people on the boards to flat out answer questions which are obviously homework rather than guide the students through the learning process. although i must admit, i probably would have tried this if i were in a hurry if it had existed when i was a kid.

One of the most important parts of learning is to discuss problems with others. If 2 people read the same source they might have different interpretations.

By all means help those who ask but provide a source so they can read for themselves.

The student who asks for our answers to be phrased as if we are answering a test and to include examples is clearly going to plagiarize our answers. Give them a source but, let the interpretation be theirs. This might encourage them to "Google" on their own next time.

It might just be easier for some people if another person kindly explains their homework to them. I know that sometimes textbooks and other websites can be confusing. Some people might understand better with Yahoo Answers.

But then again, I suppose some of them are too busy or lazy.

Why should u have a problem with people actually utilizing this site for educational gain. If they choose it over google, it's their decision. Besides, it may not even be on google, they may not find it. And to reply to the answer (2 places?) above me, it may not be in their books.

They're probably too lazy to do proper research. Either that or they think if you have a lot of people reaching consensus it's a good bet that the answer is probably right. (though technically it may be cheating)

"Use Google." Ha! Nice one.

How about reading the g**d**n books you're supposed to read, instead?
