I mean this differently than most people: Why do we go on living when our goals are set for us by society and our petty lives end all too quickly? I was having an exsistential crisis over this. Why live if nothing grand awaits you? There is no great journey, or heroic quest. Why don't they exsist? Why MUST you go to school, get a degree, make money, have kids, then die?

Please, don't give me an answer with God in it. I don't believe in the biblical God.
I mean, I feel as though my purpose is to do something grand, but there's nothing grand left to do!!

The point of living, is YOU. You are a part of something extraordinary... not something mediocre. Put yourself outside of the world for a moment and really look at the Earth and tell me that it is not beautiful and wondrous. Regardless of how we got here, or why we're here, there is something magical and amazing about life. All life... not just human life.
Just because you pick a beautiful flower and are only able to enjoy it's beauty for a small amount of time before it wilts... does not make the moment you spent with that flower any less beautiful.
I wish that I could just give you a BIG HUG and give you all the answers. But the answers to the questions you seek are ones that you have to find yourself. Remember that life is a journey... only you can determine if you walk away victorious.
Be Well and Peacefull!
:o)

We have to set our goals a bit lower, because we may have set them too high. It is due to our constant bombardment of external ideologies, TV movies, etc.
If you were born in a small farm where you were not touched by the absurdity of media, you would have been more realistic in your expectations of life,
We get up in the morning, we clean up, pee and poop if we need to. grab breakfast, work, work, come home, sleep and do it all again the next day.
Life is not grandiose. It hink you need to simplify. FInd a skill and work. Find meaning in the service of your fellow man. Serve your country. Find love in the right places,
Love your world. It is beautiful. Wake up and give thanks for the sun, the earth and the food that we eat.
"Grand"? Sounds like a used car salesman sold you that idea. Probably took your money too.
Stay close to the earth. It is your mother. Plant a garden, Grand is the first fruit or the first flower.

You have control over your life as long as you're alive. YOU can take control, but not until sufficient age. For many it isn't until the influences of immediate family fade into the background and one feels one has rechosen the values handed down to him or chosen new ones of his own satisfaction. There is no rule saying one MUST go to school (but if you don't a less than stellar life--think economics), get a degree (again, economics), make money (again, economics and avoid starvation and low quality of life that makes you WANT to die), have kids (no one must have kids, there are many with vasdectomies and tubal ligations or simply stick to their guns about NOT bringing innocent children into this damned world).
Death is inevitable. We don't know if it is today, tomorrow, 10 years from now, or when 99 years old. But if the ending (death) is told, the author by definition (YOU have no choice must live) won't write the story?

you don't need to go to school, get a degree, make money, have kids or any of that nonsense. you can follow in the footsteps of jesus and be a smelly homeless hippy relying on charity. jesus was probably the most existential of all existentialists. i am always amused at how many christians would never invite jesus into their homes. anyway i am digressing. you can do any number of things -- i think you are still hung up on a very non-existential belief that some things have more merit and/or value than others. many judeo-christian ideologies are worth keeping. materialism and ego aren't. the only thing without merit is doing nothing -- unless of course you can make art out of nothingness.

To live.
be in the now breath deeply and truly live. You will get more out of that than any degree, money you receive. And if you see no satisfaction in having kids, then you are not ready to have any. The answer is here, just don't let the empty feelings of existentialism haunt you, they are a tool to find your true self and purpose.

Doesn't living make you happy?
According to the Bible, God created us so we could be happy.
Sure I'm not really happy now, and there may be everlasting life for select others in the future, but I do like life. I don't hate it, I don't love it, but I still enjoy living.

The path you describe is the one followed by *almost* all; why not have some courage and find your own and follow it.
You are not required to be uncreative, clonelike and "victimized". Make an effort, and you'll discover the "point", along the way :))

Scientifically speaking, every species is here to keep their species on the face of the Earth. DNA is what drives us to do this.
We humans sure are doing a good job fulfilling that, huh?
