I'm 14 years old and I really want to become a journalist/writer. Do I need to start writing some things that I can submit with my resume when I'm older? And if so, what do I write about?

Write now! Do you have a school newspaper or magazine? Write for them. Send a short article to your home-town newspaper. Write blurbs for the Internet. You could do worse than writing answers for Y!A. But write!

"There's no money in that," you may say. Well, no, there isn't. But to be paid for your trade, you must learn it first. That means writing, writing, writing, listening to those who criticize your work, and then writing more.

If journalism is what you want to do, practice writing about what you hear, see, and participate in. Read what other people write about events and learn from what they omit and what they include.

A hard lesson you must learn is to please your readers and your editors. If someone criticizes what you write, listen to what they say, then rewrite it. You do not have to write it the way they tell you, but you do have to correct what they did not like.

Do not worry about writing something for a future resumé. The future "you" will have moved beyond what you can write today, and, in any case, the front page of a resumé is all that ever gets read.

at first, i want to shake Ur hand for knowing what u want. Secondly, i can tell u some tips-and-tricks how to become one.
At a start u need to realize u need to prove Ur language skills. (it's a shame for a writer to leave spelling mistakes, right? :)))). Than don't write Smith now to keep it for submitting in the future- by the time u will notice that things are changing as well as actualities and Ur point of view. if u want to write - start today!
call to a girl/travel/school magazine and offer to give a hand in taking an interview about cosmetics / travels / hobbies / sports/ handicrafts, etc. Just don't say "i can write anything", it usually sounds like "i can't do anything. just talk about it".
if they will accept Ur offer think of someone to interview (it doesn't have to be someone famous - can be Ur neighbor, some classmates, teachers, etc) make very exact and interesting questions. make the dialog funny. record it on the tape so later u could slowly write things down a bit correcting it.
any newspaper, magazine is Ur chance. be creative!! and ..GOOD LUCK!!

Where to start... Its just like anything, I want to be an author when I grow up, and I just started... well writing. Practice often, and save everything you write. You may need it later.

Start with small publications, school newspaper, village newspaper, or weekly newspaper. First you want to build up your confidence by seeing your work published. Smaller publications are less picky than big publications.
