Before all of this non-sense A-Rod has to opt out of his contract in order for any team to go after this tool. now....
First off, I'll call out jft_24 and say Lugo isn't leaving Boston after this season. We made the mistake by letting go of Renteria too soon and should have kept Cabrera after 04, so you will not see Lugo gone after this season, win or lose. Also, the Sox would not put A-Rod at SS because he is a different fielder since making the change to 3rd base. Next, ScubaSteve is right when he says that Boston is harder to play for than NY as far as the press in sports goes. However, we could afford him if we really wanted to pursuit him, Lowell is up after this season (though I'd like them to resign him) and I think Schilling will be gone at the end of the season, if we decided to go after A-Rod. Crisp will be traded away and we will have a younger, cheaper CF in Jacoby Ellsbury. Manny has one more year on his contract, but when he leaves it will free up a lot of room. Personally, I don't see Manny playing in Boston after next season.
Now let me say that I would not like to see A-Rod here in Boston next season. Yes, he is a great ball player and thinking of our line-up with Ortiz, Manny, and A-Rod as a 3,4,5 (in any order) would be great, but I don't like the guy. The mentality of Sox fans is that he is the enemy, and we don't want to see a guy that slaps the ball (ALCS 04), or yells stuff at fielders (in Toronto this season) in a Boston uniform. He is a great player, but not a class act that I would cheer for when he was in a Sox uni. A lot of baseball experts say we would like to steal him from the Yankees like they did to us with Damon, but to be honest, they can have (No Beard No Hair No Soul) Johnny Damon because we have a better fielder in prospect like Jacoby Ellsbury who will be out there next year anyway. That's just my take on the whole thing.

The Sox should make every attempt to lure A-Rod out of NY. A-Rod, despite the reputation of being a "team destroyer" is the best player in baseball. That being said... I think they should also try to resign Lowell, remember A-Rod can play shortstop too! Lugo could easily make the transition to 2nd allowing the Sox to use Pedroia as trade bait for a quality Center Fielder.
As much as A-Rod will demand on the open market, the Sox will be lucky to get him for less than 28mil / yr for 5 years, however in today's market and the marketability of a player like A-Rod, they'll come out ahead.
Also remember the Sox will be losing some big contracts this offseason.... Clement (9mil), Schilling (13mil), possibly Lowell (9mil), Tavarez (3mil), Timlin (3mil). With the young arms they have in the minors they could afford to lose pitching to make room for guys like Lopez, Buckholz, Hanson, Delcarmen, and Bowden.

I would love to have A-Rod on the Sox...he is a great player...keep Lowell, get rid of Lugo, and move A-Rod back where he belongs at short stop...if the Sox could pick him up and keep Manny they would be unstoppable with him, Manny, and Papi in the middle of the line-up. It will never happen but it is fun to think about. Anyway...he is only a free agent if he opts out of his contract.

I think the Red Sox should sign Lowell to a contract extension. A-Rod is too big of a risk and he wants to much money. The greedy @ss!

If A-Rod couldn't handle the pressure in NY why would he leave to go to Boston, where they are the baseball kings of pressure. I think that he will opt out and go back to the Yanks because they can afford him a tad bit more than the Bo Sox. Another train of thought is him switching coasts and signing with the Angels, another team that has the funding to sign a player of his annual demands.
I would wager that the scrutiny in Anaheim/L.A. is a notch or two below the east coast teams.

How did Arod destroy the Mariners? I don't think they should sign him because it would be against their fans always hating on him. According to some major leaguers the Boston Press is tougher on players than NY media, so being how he struggled for a few years getting used to the NY media it would be a mistake. Not to mention they can't afford him. How long do you expect Lowell to play for? He's already starting to show his age. He's a great player but a new contract?

Outside of the I hate you, you hate us feeling that the Bosox nation and the Yankee nation have, he's a helluva player. Would Boston love to have him; I'm sure they would. The questions are, will Boston pay for him? Will Steinbrenner pay to keep more rich wholesome baseball history in the pinstripes while A-Rod continues his home run hunt? Personally, I would love to see him go to Boston to gang up on them damn Yankees!!

A-Rod ISN'T a free agent after this season. That is only if he opts out of his contract. Which he won't so this question is irrelevant.
