I tip a waitress.
I would tip anyone who went out of their way to help me, like a person who carries my suitcases to my room in a hotel, if they are nice to me.
Who do you tip in a bathroom. I never see anyone there except those people in there to use it.

I agree that it has gotten out of hand, and has lost it's meaning.
To me service is top priority at all times.
I have stopped going to many places because the service is marginal at best.
For stores, restaurants, and any other personal service I may require, my decision to go back will depend on the type of service we have received previously.
Tipping should be withheld in cases of bad service, and trust me I have no reservations of doing so, and letting them know why.
Those who provide the service with care, and a smile should, and will receive the extras.
Just because tipping has become, or has been made into an "expectation" does not mean we have to comply when the service does not justify it.
If we keep rewarding marginal, or sub standard service, there will be no reason for anyone to improve the services.

I 100% agree.
And these days tipping is so expected that people forget the main reason tipping even exsists... which is to improve the level of service. Waiters, bartenders ect ect expect big tips even when they do a lousy job. Even when you get take out pizza it seems they give you an attitude if you dont tip. Perhaps the problem is that the palces they work just dont pay them enough.

I got a pizza delivered the other day. They were handing it to me vertically asking for the $ and a tip. I wanted to refuse the pizza, but I paid for it out of desperation - we were starving and I was sharing it with a coworker.
I was raised to tip heavily. I can't not tip - but I really wanted to that day!
Tip jars are everywhere! It is way out of hand.

Amen! I can't understand tip jars on take-out counters or in the restrooms. What's next? The Mc Donald's drive-thru window?

It can only get out of hand when you are FORCED to tip or be conisderate.
If you feel that a service person is waiting and deserving of a tip, that is a good sign telling you to tip them.
If you don't want to show gratitude, then don't. Keep your money to yourself, you will probably need medicine someday....
