This is a good question.

I was 12 years old. I had been out playing soccer with my friends and came into the house to cool off (those were the days of air conditioner units in the windows). I saw my mom sitting and crying, talking on the phone. Actually, it was wailing, and the first thing I thought of was that something had happened to my dad.

She finally told me, between gulping sobs, that Elvis had died and she and her sister were talking long-distance on the phone for TWO HOURS, crying together.

I was surprised to hear it, but to me, Elvis was a fat guy who wore white suits and threw sweaty rags at people in the audience. I was too young to remember a young Elvis. Therefore, his death didn't affect me much.

My mom, who died a few years ago, collected a bunch of Elvis trading cards that year that Elvis died. They came with bubble gum. I found them a couple of months ago, still pristine, in one of her old jewelry boxes. I could sell them on ebay, but somehow that seems wrong, considering how much she loved Elvis.

As a 44-year-old now, I can appreciate how beautiful he was in his youth. But at the time, he was just a fat old man to me, I'm sorry to say.

I was sitting in my living room in Ft. Riley, KS watching TV when it came on about Elvis. I was pregnant with my 3rd baby. When JFK was assassinated I was in my 8th grade science class when it was announced over the intercom. My teacher walked out of the room crying. All the school classes ended for the day.

I was at the kitchen table eating a snack while my mother was doing dishes. We heard the announcement on the radio. Even though I was very young, I knew who Elvis was, since my mom let me watch his movies and I loved some of his songs.
