That was the first thing that occurred to me. He engineered a win for the Republicans twice now, he's probably being tapped to do it again since their field is so weak and they clearly have a huge challenge in front of them as far as beating the Democrats in '08. Party comes before anything, that's the Republican mantra.

That is not exactly a "secret agenda". Obviously he is partisan and is going to do what he can to get the Republican elected (and help the candidate he most likes get the nomination).

I am no fan of Rove (although I am a Republican) but I see nothing sinister in this....this is what he does (and should not be a surprise to anyone).

I would say it is unlikely that he will come on to any campaign officially however. He has problem with some elements of his own party (particularly on the issue of immigration). He will advise in a unofficial manner however I am sure. (I would expect to see him running some kind of PAC group and commercials and the like supporting the Republican and attacking the Democrat).

Yep. Like Rove or not, agree with his tactics or not, he know how to get people elected. After losing in '06, the republicans want to win in '08. There is a reason that '02 was the first time since FDR that the party in power gained seats in an off year election. Rove had alot to do with that.

No, he's leaving the White House to make himself available to potential GOP 08 clients.

It's two years into a president's 2nd term. Time for most of the high fliers to start moving on to their next jobs.

I think it goes like this...Libs have been screaming for Rove to resign for years, so George and Karl are sitting around figuring out what would really screw with liberals' heads...Karl says, "They would totally freak if I resigned...they would be sure it was a secret plan and go absolutely paranoid." George said, "Way cool, Karl...." and a plan was born...

I don't think so- his name would sink any campaign right now. I 'm concerned that he sees something scary coming down the road, and jumped ship before it arrived. Considering how many times he's faced down congress, I'm a little worried about what could scare Karl Rove.

I said that in answer to a question earlier this week, although I didn't say it was secret.

As to the guy who said he left to avoid prosecution. He can still be prosecuted if he broke the law----even after he leaves. Look at Scooter Libby.

The plan goes into effect with a pardon from W., and a GOP ticket of Thompson/Romney.

Sure, that may be one reason. He'll need a job after '08 anyway. I'm sure he'll show up again on someone's staff!
