I agree that it makes sense to legalize it, but a lot of different forces are acting to keep it illegal. Here is a list of the suspects:
The prohibitionists lost the alcohol battle 70 years ago and they’re still pissed off about that. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the marijuana prohibition began shortly thereafter. They still provide the backbone of the marijuana prohibition movement.
The puritan ethic that pervades the public’s conscience dictates that happiness cannot be easy, and that applies especially to mind altering substances. Happiness can only come from hard work and not a big rasta splif.
Law enforcement has benefited dramatically from a jobs and funding perspective. Talk about cash cows. Busting pot heads is relatively easy compared to arresting terrorists and real criminals, and it keeps a sizable portion of law enforcement employed. Plus, you get to keep confiscated drug booty. Double plus good.
Joe Six Pack has his six pack so he’s happy. Why rock the boat?
The public is basically asleep and can’t be bothered. After all, it’s not their ox that’s being gored.
Young people have been so inundated with propaganda that for the most part they cannot think rationally about it. All they know is that it is the devil’s playground and your life will be ruined if you even accidentally brush up against the evil weed. It’s Reefer Madness Redux.
Pot heads themselves are too laid back to do anything. That after all, is the point, isn’t it?
I could go into a very long list of why it should be legal, but instead I’ll list just one supposed American concept: liberty. Who owns our bodies? Who has the right to tell us what we can and can’t do in the privacy of our own homes? If you support marijuana prohibition then your answer to my rhetorical questions is that the state owns your body. You are not free:you are the chattel of the state.

The government rather profit from the incarceration of users and dealers in the criminal justice "business".
Put it this way, a drug conviction voids you from federal financial aid as well as many jobs, creating segregation since racial segregation was outlawed.
Put it like this, they rather classify us as users and discriminate us rather than collecting the endless tax dollars from taxing legal marijuana.
Can you imagine how many people can get a better education if the whole drug conviction clause was overturned?

Hemp actually is a superior fiber and you can grow it legally. It's a pain in the butt, however it can be done.
As for legalizing the bud, the primary problem is that it's smoked - and smoking is becoming a mortal sin in this country.

Ignorance.
Plus, too much money is being made keeping it illegal.
The 'war on drugs' is self perpetuating - a pure 'demand side economics' model.
They could make more money legalizing pot, and taxing the living crap out of it (it would still be cheaper to buy, and the quality would be regulated).
They could also solve the prison overcrowding problem by releasing all of the first time, non-violent marijuana offenders.
But that would all require intelligence.
And we are surrounded by ignorance.

There is no popular will to change the law.
You want it legalized, convince a majority of people it should be done. They, in turn will put pressure on their elected officials, and POW! Legal Dope!
But first, finish that bag of Doritos...

I don't know man, but it's the #1 cash crop in the US.
It would probably greatly benefit the economy if it was legal.
They should put rules on it like alcohol or cigarettes already have.

because we keep electing 60 yr olds who think that legalizing pot will spark some kind of government revolt...
honestly.. thats the only thing that makes any bit of sense.. and it doesnt even make sense. Theres no reason that its at least not decriminalized.

I'm going to try and quote a comedian, Daniel Tosh, as best as I can on this one.
"I wish that they'd legalize marijuana. That way, those stupid pot heads will have nothing left to talk about. JESUS CHRIST all they do is complain about how weed should be legal. You know what, I'm going to take a stand on this and say that you guys should grow up and do heroin like all the real adults do."
..nuff said.

There are so many stipulations to its use...whats the point. It would be the same as alcohol....so many rules. If you MUST use it then your better off just trying to get away with it like under age drinking. Everyone has there own opinion about it, but look how it alters our judgement. Many people do many stupids things when under the influence.

Because the cotton industry lobbies against it. (Hemp is a far superior fiber)
Also the government makes too much money in the illegal drug trade to ever give it up.
