Explain why large earthworms come to the surface after a heavy rain?

Earthworms breath oxygen through their bodies. If it rains, they need to surface, else they will drown.
Large earthworms or not - they all have the same reaction towards too much water.

If submerged, they drown.

Earthworms like it wet but not too wet. If they are not getting enough air they will rise up.

because of the fact the water could drown them below the floor, so that they arise so that they could breathe. i'm no longer kidding ... because of the fact of this they arrive to the exterior after a heavy rain.
